Great movie, but False.

I'm not sure it inspired or changed anything, which is usually the easiest hallmark of an "important" film.

When he went to the police academy may be the best piece of his career

It was funny, but not important.

I'll always like it because of those University of South Carolina students that made it into the movie.

Probably selling insurance or working at a car dealership.

2 of them actually sued the production company after the movie was released.

Imagine if he had went through Louisiana and ended up with LSU.

..or Grambling.

This movie literally caused the FBI to start a file on a foreigner driving across country in an ice cream truck

Along with the Jackasses, it's one of the top guerilla-type movies for sure.

It didn't revolutionize the comedy genre or inspire a significant and identifiable subgenre in its wake, so not really important. Its major successor was just another, much less funny Sacha Baron Cohen film. In this sense of "important" comedies, you're talking more about your "Animal House," "The General," "Annie Hall," "Airplane!," or even "American Pie" movies, ones that, for better or worse, successfully jump-started (if not necessarily originated) cottage industries.

Socially, "Borat" revealed that there are a lot of dumbasses in America. We learned that somewhere around approximately 1794. So not really "important" in that sense.

But it was hilarious, no argument there.

And lost.

They claimed it cost them jobs and that they were duped by Cohen into thinking the movie would never be shown in the U.S. And they wanted that scene removed on the DVD release.

And the etiquette teacher from the Dinner Party when Cohen brings over that hooker sued as well but was shot down.

Da Ali G Show was dynamite.....it all kind of culminated with the Borat movie. Important? I don't think so, looking back. It was a special moment in time.
