The brain of Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL player who was convicted of murder and later hanged himself in prison, showed clear signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) at a stage that researchers had never seen in a person below the age of 46, according to The Washington Post.

As Jan Leestma, a forensic neuropathologist has time and again told Newsweek, it’s very tricky business mapping behavior onto the physical features of the brain. Leestma, who did not evaluate Hernandez’s case, seemed struck by the fact that researchers had observed Stage 3 CTE in the brain of a man who died at 27 years old.

“It’s certainly worrisome that you have CTE in such a young person,” Leestma told Newsweek. “They ought to be able to somehow correlate that to number of hits and concussions and stuff like that. It probably would correlate.”

As for what that could mean behaviorally, Leestma says people with that level of CTE can become impulsive and have “rage attacks.” While Leestma himself has not seen the images of Hernandez’s brain, he speculated that the buildup of tau protein may have led to a disconnection or damage to Hernandez’s frontal lobes, which are associated with impulse control.

This story in isolation won't do it, but a case is gradually building up that's going to be the end of football as we know it.

I’m sure it was all caused by football...Retards.

Dude probably had his brains scattered during multiple gang initiations

Or drugs. I’m sure he started at a young age, which isn’t good.

Brain Injury Never Seen Before

It's been seen before in millions of cases throughout history.

Even Hitler had it.

It's called being an a-hole.

Was this the brain study sought by his family and legal team to prove that the NFL owes them some money? Seems legit.

Better enjoy football while you can. It is going to die a quick death over the next decade.

Unfortunately for the players they have 1 of 2 options...

1. Play football, get paid millions, risk potential brain damage

2. Don't play football, don't make millions, don't get brain damage

As long as players are informed of the risks, there is no reason things should change. If they are willing to take the risk then let them. If the NFL keeps trying to dumb down the product everyone will end up with option #2 because no one will want to watch.

I don't disagree with you but it's a bit of an illogical argument to make.

I'm not sure what specific argument you are referring to, but in my eyes not only will rule changes come into play eventually diminishing the product for viewers, but parents are going to express gradually more hesitation choosing football over alternative sports due to mounting concerns over CTE.

Just my two cents, and I'm not Nostradamus so I could be wrong, but I'm having a pretty pessimistic outlook over the sport

I find all of these studies to be biased on a scientific level. The people who donate their brains to science aren't exactly the folks who lived a normal life, and I wonder how much it skews these results.

Close:

1. Play football, get paid millions, risk potential brain damage

2. Deal, get paid millions, risk potential brain damage

3. Wash cars, don't make millions, don't get brain damage

4. Work at BK, don't make millions, don't get brain damage

5. Go to prison, don't make millions, get bung damage

Yeah I bet his shitty life decision making like drugs and gangs and guns were all caused by football trauma.

Nothing to do with his upbringing and his choice of friends.
