Izzo's files civil RICO charges against Baton Rouge's least favorite grocery chain

Izzo’s files civil RICO charges against Rouses in lawsuit over burrito recipe, trade practices

Izzo’s Illegal Burrito and its parent company have upped the ante in their long-running lawsuit against the owners of Rouses Supermarkets.
In court documents filed Oct. 27, the Baton Rouge-based restaurant chain alleges the south Louisiana supermarket chain committed conspiracy under the civil Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, Act.
RICO cases are serious business, and have brought down mafia dons, corrupt government officials and Major League Baseball teams, and the RICO statute isn’t typically used in disputes between two businesses. But in its recent court filing, Izzo’s alleges Rouses engaged in the kind of corruption and racketeering that constitute a RICO action.
quote:
Izzo’s RICO argument, according to its lawsuit, is threefold:
1. Rouses, in 2011, allegedly tried to bribe an Izzo’s restaurant manager into going to work for Rouses so the supermarket could steal his Izzo’s recipe book and establish burrito bars, similar to Izzo’s, in their stores.
2. Rouses conspired to keep Izzo’s out of shopping center developments—specifically Juban Crossing—where Rouses was an anchor tenant. The suit claims Rouses’ executives told leasing agents for Juban Crossing in phone calls that Izzo’s “sold ‘substandard’ products and was ‘litigious’” —allegedly, an act of wire fraud—in an effort to keep Izzo’s out of the Denham Springs retail development.
3. Rouses allegedly continues to use Izzo’s trademark recipes at its own burrito bars.
Another reason why Rouses sucks.

I see the other stuff, but how do you trademark a burrito? Special seasoning blend of 11 herbs and spices?

I'll never be any grocery store's fan-boy, but is there really a call to arms against Rouse's???? I don't think I've ever seen a negative thing besides your post.

Izzo's should be careful. I hear their burritos are illegal.

Rouses would only suck if they actually starting making nasty arse Izzo's food there.

I used to like Rouses when they first came to Denham Springs and Antioch at Airline Highway location.
Today, not so much.
Spoiled produce, dairy and meats have turned me away. I actually miss LeBlanc's.
Rouses grew too fast through acquisition. And it's obvious now they didn't have a good foundation that allowed them to maintain their original store standards.

"least favorite grocery chain" lol, you prefer Wal-Mart? or.... There aren't many chains left, they're all dying off.
I visit Rouse's at Juban for lunch on occasion... newsflash, there is no burrito bar there, and there's a MOE's which I feel is sub standard.

This is par for the course for the Rouses chain in Baton Rouge. They came with a lot of hype, and ended up sucking badly.

Rouses’ suppliers in Baton Rouge suck arse.
Leblancs was part of AG and the products were quality.
Rouses is not a member of AG because of a pissing match some years ago so they have a different supplier who doesn’t seem to care that the quality has taken a large drop.

Supposedly they shite the bed pretty badly in Baton Rouge - particularly in the stores they acquired to penetrate AG's vice grip on the local market.
The stores they developed from the ground up (Airline, Juban) are decent.

This! frickin' Walmart runs every decent grocery out of business undercutting them with crap quality products. Sorry, but "select" grade meat sucks. If you're happy with that, you love your double-wide too.
Mexiso and Texas should sue Izzo's for making burritos.

I think Supervalu out of Mississippi is their supplier, which is the same as Albertsons.
You'd probably notice the difference pretty quickly if you shop regularly at Dorignac's or LeBlanc's, then switched to Rouses. It would be even more obvious if your go-to was Whole Foods.
