The World Series champion Houston Astros have acquired right-hander Gerrit Cole in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports. In exchange, the Pirates will receive pitcher Joe Musgrove and third baseman Colin Moran, the source said. It was unclear if additional players would be heading to Pittsburgh in the deal

In a move that’s sure to jolt the market for starting pitchers, Yankees righty Masahiro Tanaka has decided against opting out of the remaining three years of his contract, he announced through the organization. Tanaka calls it a “simple decision” to remain with the organization, stating that he has “truly enjoyed the past four years playing for this organization and for the wonderful fans of New York.”
quote:
In any event, the Yankees have now perhaps effectively made their biggest addition of the winter. With Tanaka on the books, New York has something in the realm of $144MM committed to payroll already (including projected arbitration salaries) and the club is seemingly committed to staying beneath the luxury tax line in 2018.

NOV. 3: Miami is informing other teams that it is willing to listen on Stanton, Gordon, and Prado but will not entertain offers on Yelich and Ozuna at this time, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (via Twitter). Whether the stance on the latter two players might change isn’t yet clear. It’s possible that the club wishes to focus first on the other pieces.
quote:
The Orioles have declined their club options over shortstop J.J. Hardy and lefty Wade Miley, per a club announcement. Both players will hit the open market for the first time.

Cubs should re-sign Davis, Duensing, and Jon Jizzay
I dont see them getting Arrieta back and I have a feeling Seabiscuit will retire

My interests:
How can the Astros upgrade their bullpen?
How do the Cubs address their SP concerns?
What power bat does Boston go for?
Will Baltimore accept they need to rebuild?
Where does Darvish go? Possibly connected is where does Otani go?
AL West in general
Marlins trade Giancarlo/can anyone contend with the Nats for the NL East next year?

I'm not looking hard at the moment but JD is the only big bat I'm seeing.

Upton signed a 5 year deal to stay with Angels. I hope the STL gets Moustakas. He would fill a big hole.

So earlier today morosi said that Stanton gave the Marlins his list of acceptable teams. He only said the Dodgers were on it and that they were his top choice and he wants to see what happens there first but that's not going not happen so I'm interested in who else is on his list
Apparently he has not vetoed a trade yet

NSIAP but Dan O'Dowd and Joel Sherman made a great point on MLBN last couple of days about how the excuses of Otani/Stanton slowing down free agency is bs.
They both said teams have become smarter than ever before and know how bad FA is and have educated their owners about it so that you don't have Mike Illitch/Ted Lerner types ruining their future. They know players will panic and settle for an amount favorable to the team.
