ESPN came to power because of sports center and highlights. You can get that other places quicker. My MLB app pushes highlights live.
It’s buying time. I’m not sure how they can adapt besides streaming smaller market stuff like college games.

Blockbuster couldn't do much.
Not true. Blockbuster had the name recognition and capital to do what Netflix and Redbox have done. They just didn't and they have paid the price for being stubborn and short sighted.

Espn is stuck in a bad place. Huge TV contracts with various leagues and a dwindling viewer base.
I think they need to seriously consider allowing people to “buy” the ability to watch individual games even if you don’t have that cable package.
They also need to bring in new talent.
Wouldn’t hate seeing HBO 24/7 type “reality” shows that follow teams or individuals or whatever.
ETA just a general note but I am shocked that the illegal streams / sharing of account username practices haven’t been shutdown

Correct. Their last gasp attempts to copy redbox with those big clunky and gaudy Blue and yellow kiosks was sad to watch.

This is the direction they need to go. They need to leverage the one thing they’ve built up over the years: relationships.
Take an old game that was interesting, and Bring in the competing ‘rivals’ and have them live watch a condensed version of the game and relive it. Maybe take live comments to make it more interactive, I’m sure some of these broke former athletes would do it for very little.

ESPN is failing because of cord cutting. This fascination with ESPN failing because of politics is overplayed bullshite.

ESPN is struggling because they bet hard on the ever inflating sports bubble.
The MNF deal was really a lousy one for ESPN mainly because since SNF became the week’s main event, ESPN is left with the scraps after the networks get theirs. The MNF match ups have been pretty meh for years now. They like the NFL, have the same “if it’s on, they’ll watch regardless” arrogance.

Even with live sports, there's rarely something on ESPN that I feel like I have to watch. I cut it out and get by with the network channels and do just fine.
If it's a must watch SEC night game or MNF I'll either test my luck streaming or go to a bar if I must must see it without the risk of lagging.

Sportscenter has become the nightly news. No need to watch because we all know, and have seen, what has happened that day before it's even televised on Sportscenter.
For me, growing up in the 80's, I wanted highlights and scores. We would have to watch the nightly news to get that or wait for the paper in the morning.
Then CNN started broadcasting highlights and scores. They also had a ticker on the screen so you could see all the scores you wanted in a few minutes of watching. I watched it religiously but still got a USA Today for stats.
Then ESPN caught up and started scrolling the scores and had even more highlights. Stopped watching CNN Sports and started watching ESPN religiously but still would get a USA Today, every day, to get all the stats.
Then smart phones came along and now I get everything I want in real time and don't have to watch Sportscenter for highlights or buy a USA Today for stats anymore.
It has nothing to do with ESPN becoming too political for me. It all about getting the information I want, when I want it, and not sitting through an entire Sportscenter to get it. It's right at my finger tips 24/7 now.
