Finished watching it last night. I Enjoyed it. Agree with everyone that this season was good but not as good as the first. The whole 11s sister thing was meh but I'm sure it'll come into play next season.

It almost feels like they wrote Season 2 with the knowledge there would be a Season 3 and didn't have to blow their wad on Season 2. The cinematography and characters are so good.
Edit - Max's brother is about 4 80's teen bad guy stereotypes rolled into 1

On episode 5.
Two things I couldn't wait to share.
"I'm on a curiosity voyage. I need my paddles. I have to have my paddles!"
Sean Astin: "What's at the 'x?' Pirate treasure?"

The season was a clear step down compared to the 1st season. It was fun but felt very average.

Poor Bob. Bob the Brain. Bob the Superhero.

Hopper still the best character on tv too
Hopper with his Indiana Jones impression in the tunnel was great, and then the whole Jurassic Park esque scene in episode 8 having to trip the breakers and reboot the system (poor Bob) were fantastic.
The creators really nailed the ambiance and homages to the late 80s

Wife and I plowed through it. Very meh. S1 was way better.
I felt virtually no urgency to anything the characters did. A lot less mystery, too. First season was great in its slow reveal of the thing that went bump in the night. Here, the sky monster was teased in the trailers but it turned out there wasn't really much else to reveal about it. And they rehash the first season's monster and make it, erm, less threatening.
I'm surely not alone in my belief that E7's attempt at a standalone or spinoff tale failed miserably.
New characters contributed very little. Bob was pretty good, and I dug the conspiracy theorist detective, but Max is useless except for like two minutes when she drives the car. Billy's character is all over the place. Kali and her gang were stupid. Owens spent the season apologizing for stuff he didn't do. Lucas's family was built up in S1 as a lot more interesting than they actually turn out to be in S2. Dustin's mom was pretty fun though.
Hopper's still the best character. Steve's got the best arc. Will's the toughest character to portray this season. Props to all three of those actors for fine jobs.
Favorite line: "Hey dickheads. Why is it that the only one helping out right now is this random girl?"

Billy's character
Sucked IMO, bordered on unnecessary.
Noah Schnapp did one helluva job this season.

So since it looks like there will be a season 3 .. I'm pumped to see Billy rail Mike's mom. She's low-key the best looking chick on the show and Billy is pretty likable even though he can be an a-hole

Felt so bad for Dusty at the dance. We've all been there.

The first season had more mystery b/c no one knew what to expect. What made the show a huge success ended up being the characters, their relationships, and the way they nailed the 80s theme.
I think they focused more so on those aspects for season 2 since most of the 'mystery' was gone in season 1, and it worked for the most part (except for episode 7).
I'd be okay if the show continued going this direction, focusing on the kids and how they navigate growing up in their time and place in the world. I mean how much more can poor Will handle? Kid's gonna be super messed up in the head...

I thought the storyline was fine, but giving it its own standalone episode was a mistake. It just felt like a time waster as it was presented, with the only important takeaway being 11 learning how to amplify her powers. But if they spread that story out over 3 episodes running concurrent with the events in Hawkins, it could have felt much more natural and meaningful.

I think that I agree with you. I think that this was probably an issue with some feel to the pacing, but I also feel like we are getting a little into nitpicking territory here. As a whole I still really enjoyed this season, and nothing particularly bothered me.

I think people are being too critical of the stand alone episode. This was a very important moment for El when she's deciding what her real home looks like. When she meets her Sister and encounters a moral dilemma, she knows where she belongs. We don't get her grand entrance and her return to close the gate without it.

They just had to appease the SJWs and go the interracial route with Max smh
Dustin deserved her more imo. He put more work into her early on than Lucas
