This just came across my Twitter feed. I found it pretty interdasting, so I decided to share it so that we can all grow smarter together.

Vedic Multiplication Method

ETA: This link shows you how to handle it when the number you're multiplying has zeroes.

Thanks, but I find the abacus a little faster than that.

That's pretty cool.

I've always just done something like this if it's not an obvious/easy answer :

321 x 13

I would break it down to 321 x 10 = 3,210
321 x 3 = 963
3,210 + 963 = 4173

I have to make it as easy as possible on myself, but it's also a quick solution

This is a neat trick, but it seems like it’s just a way to demonstrate the distributive property in pictorial form as opposed to some new approach to multiplication. Counting the intersecting lines is really no different than multiplying the digits and adding the sums. E.g. 3 lines intersecting with 3 lines will have 9 points of intersect, etc., etc.

Still upvoted as it is very interesting. Will def. show my kids.

See...this is much easier and quicker and how I've always done multiplication of large numbers. I can do this in my head quicker than I can draw the lines out. It's a neat trick and all....but I just don't see how it would help anything at all. Jmo.
