So how screwed over is FOX for buying World Cup broadcasting rights?

And why couldn't this have happened to ESPN?

There is more than enough interest in the World Cup regardless of whether the US is there or not lol.

Chile and Netherlands also missed so hopefully that makes the gringo feel better

Nobody cares about soccer in this country,
They should’ve known this beforehand.
The few that do watch will watch whether the crappy US team is in it or not.

They actually got a great deal due to FIFAs frick up. Pretty sure it didn't even go through the bid process.

This country loves the world cup. All of my soccer hating friends watch every freaking game.

Yeah but it's still completely devastating for the US to not be included.

Games at god awful times and no US?
ESPN can finally feel good about something financially.

The games will be at arse o'clock
Ratings will be bad
This country also loves the world cup because the US is in the world cup. People want to watch other games because of the interest the US being in it generates. You feel a part of it and want to watch more. There's no connection to 2018 and viewership will suffer.

i disagree
the common guy will not watch unless USA is part of the tourney
its also easier for the network to market if the USA is involved

Define
Because I doubt there is
Interest in a tournament that will not involve the USA. The casual observer will not tune in. That leaves the diehards. How many of those are there in this country?
There are easily more diehard baseball fans in this country than soccer fans, yet there has been discussion on this board about timeslots for the Houston Astros because they are a "regional team" and do not have a national following. A team in one of the largest cities in the country has a regional following and can't get a primetime TV slot?
And you think there will be
Interest in the World Cup sans the USA?
Nah.

It'll make an impact
But American sports fans will watch anything they can drink to in mid-Summer

They spent $200 mil on these rights.
Oops.
Oops.

Amongst the other myriad programming fails, their exiling of the Cleveland-NY series to FS1 for whatever hot garbage is on Fox is like ranch on my hot wings.

Yeah, no. What "American sports fans" are you referring to? I sure as hell don't give a damn about the World Cup unless the USA is in it. In fact, the only people I know that do are the uber soccer fans that follow European soccer just as hard as they do the NFL or college football.
The World Cup, and Soccer in general, are not made for the US Sports fan who has an attention span of 10 seconds. And with no vested interest in it, I doubt Joe Blow is going to turn on a soccer game because he can "drink to it".

Who is more upset, FOX or gays?

Uh...no.
Did Fox buy the rights to Europe's and South America's audience. If so, then yes.
In America, for most everyone...no USA...pretty much no care. It's been that way forever.
You won't see cool videos of people at the airport or in bars cheering on Ghana vs. Mexico hoping for a last minute goal.
Soccer is purely an "Olympic sport" in America...if you even know what I mean by that statement.
