Historians: Did people vehemently defend Curley Hallman while he was the head coach here?

I was a kid when he was at LSU, and was too young to remember the dynamics of his tenure. I could imagine that the only thing more ridiculous than these Orgeron apologists would be people who defended Hallman. Did these people exist? How about for Dinardo when things started to go south for him? Did people make ridiculous excuses for him as well?

I'll hang up and listen.

How could you even know beyond a few sports writers and people you had daily contact with what they thought?
Social media has changed the game. You have instant access to 100s of peoples opinions.

The difference is the media outlets. Fans had no voice. Average joe can be heard today by many. The all you could do is wrtie a letter or call the ADs office.
This isn’t an apples to apples comparison.

Hell, back in those days you couldn't even get more than a paragraph on LSU football in the Monroe News Star......... Who knows.

No social media. We also weren't a consistent top 10 program when we hired him. The last NC at that time was 1959 when only white people could play. It was a different dynamic when Curly was hired.

Curly didn't work out but he was at least qualified enough to get hired. Orgeron was not qualified for any HC job in the country when we hired him. Complete bafoonery.

The only main gripes I remember hearing was how he somehow lost all the major in state recruits. Dinardo deserves some credit by coming in and putting the fence back up with Kevin Faulk.

I was at LSU at the time and people would buy the bumper stickers that said “Crazy bout Curley” and cut them and apply them to their cars to read “Curley bout Crazy”. Old school social media.

No one was defending Hallman based on his record and the fact that he was banging co-eds as he was walking out the door.

There was no TR or social media then. If there had been, it would have been epic.

I can recall that he had his supporters. His send your earrings back to Momma speech when he was hired has been made fun of for ages but as you can imagine was quite popular here at the time when he said it.

But his first two games were horrendous, just hard to defend, even though there was a realization that there were some talent deficiencies to overcome. That's why I said the State game reminded me of Curley's first two games. You can only blame relative talent so much if you actually pay attention to what you see out there.

As far as I know O is not banging coeds! Brett Farve made us think Curley could coach, but O made us think he could coach by how well the senior laden team last year responded to Les being gone. The jury is still out if O can turn it around.

Terrible. Awful of awful coaches.

Bad. So so bad.

Worse than you can ever imagine.

How about 14 - 110yd sprints the day after a game?
Full pads on Thursday.

Archer is the first coach I remember. I was very young but I think I recall fans being quite worked up at the end of Archer's tenure and most of Hallman's tenure. Most people liked Dinardo for the first 2-3 years.

No, we didn’t have the bandwagon internet idiots that grappled on after the winning seasons when going out to campus and “loving my tigers” on Facebook became the thing to do.

Most of the Miles lovers and O defenders are these people, and mostly women if you really look at it closely.

i was younger but from what i remember of how my dad and how his friends reacted it was something like this

1991: Went 5-6, were hoping for more but it's going to take time to clean up the mess Archer left

1992: holy shite this guy sucks

1993: Okay we're going to get rid of this clown, then we beat Bama and it looked like we were going to make a bowl game so there was hope maybe it was turning around, lose the last game to Arky and it was just like wow. This guy is gone, right? No? wtf??? Joe Dean is horrible.

1994: Depression
