Honest opinion from a moderate who owns guns. Yes there are some extreme Berkeley types who want to outright ban guns. Most have probably grown up in an urban environment where they think there isn't as much of a need or demand.
The vast majority of Americans do not subscribe to this belief, but I think most support limited regulation. You get into slippery slope argument saying background checks lead to gun bans. I own 12 guns and support the second amendment but I am not totally against background checks with mandatory gun safety for new gun owners.
This guy would have been able to purchase guns legally and pass all checks so much of this will done very little for this situation. I do think being dismissive to those who are nervous about guns creates an environment where sensibility ends on both sides. The NRA has done a great job pissing off sensible people by becoming ultra political. I stop being a supporter about 6 years ago when it was obvious they are just stoking fear to sell guns.

people like to hunt, shoot and protect their homes from intruders. nobody is part of a militia that is preparing to fight off the American government one day.

The entire purpose of the 2nd Amendment, and the fact it's SECOND right after free speech, is because an armed population is necessary for a free state.
Also the shooter in Vegas was rich and passed all the background checks and got his guns legally.

I have more guns than I have outfits in my closet...and they all serve a distinct purpose. Most are hunting rifles, but different calibers are better suited for different situations. As far as cop killer bullets are concerned, that’s a ridiculous misnomer that some liberal made up. There are certainly types of ammunition that are geared toward penetration, but most any high powered rifle will penetrate a non mil spec vest.
You don’t have to own 10 guns or whatever if you don’t want to, but don’t ever tell me that I can’t.

That's not entirely true. Though very small in numbers, groups exist with that very philosophy.
I don't think guns should be banned simply because the rights of the majority should not be lessened because of the actions of a few lunatics. You can't regulate lunacy. However, for me to say that the arrival of a hostile government is not possible is just false. Not so much here, because we love liberty, but it has happened in history before. I would prefer to have the ability to defend my home and family if necessary.

While militarily we beat them decisively, the Vietnamese managed to kill 58,000 of us. I'm not sure how many the war in Afghanistan cost us, but it wasn't a low number.
ETA: My point is, you don't have to win militarily to defeat a major power. You just have to make it bloodier than what it's worth.....which is exactly what happened in Vietnam.
