What the hell was Trump thinking by supporting Strange?

Now he is deleting some of his tweets.
I don't care what kind of deal he had with the McConnell, but it was biggly mistake supporting strange. I'd be pisses off if I was Moore.

He listened to the wrong people.

Trump has always been attracted to some strange.

I have never understood his support for Strange either. Even his rally didn't move the needle all that much leading to him getting blown out.
Going forward, I wonder if some GOP candidates will take a thanks but no thanks approach for Trumps endorsement. This loss seems seemed to water down his support.

It was 'check the box' support.
He's already behind Moore in the general.

He was trying to placate turtle.

McConnell's support doomed Strange, not Trump's support.
Lots of folks also didn't like the way Strange was appointed by Gov. Bentley while Strange was AG and supposed to be investigating Gov. Bentley.

It was definitely a political error. These things happen. I live in Alabama. Strange didn't have a chance. And even if he did have a chance he shot himself in the foot with his campaign against Brooks. You can't run a campaign against a guy that is part of the freedom caucus and portray him as a Pelosi twin and then think his voters are going to come over to you in the runoff
Strange ran a 100% negative nasty campaign in both the initial Primary and the runoff. I really have no idea why he thought that strategy was a winner

Trump could muscle Strange...but not Moore. All Trump has to do is tell Moore this, and Moore will understand, agree, and take it as a compliment and officially board the Trump Train.

He got played by mcconnell.

Moore has stated from day one he has no issue with Trump not endorsing him and will work tirelessly on his agenda.

1) Strange was the "sitting" GOP Senator.
2) The Senate is the hardest place for legislation to pass, and Trump needs GOPe support.
3) Everyone knows that Trump made the deal with McConnell and why. And they don't care!
4) McConnell and the GOPe just poured time, money, and effort into the Strange campaign. They cut a deal for Trump's support, and he kept his word.
5) GOPe just got their arses handed to them.
6) Trump was propelled by the anti establishment conservative wave. He did not create the movement. The GOPe, DNC, and MSM did! Yet all three still don't understand!
7) Moore is Trump's more natural ally because he is not establishment.
8) MAGA won. Both Trump and Moore understand this, and they emerged victorious.
9) Therefore, Moore is not only not pissed, he will have Trump's full support in kicking some DNC/MSM Political Complex arse in the general election.
So much winning!

If he's getting now, I'm pretty sure it would have to be strange.

He was just playing nice until the citizens of the USA made it clear not even Trump can save the establishment. Trump was just trying to keep the peace until his supporters made a strong statement (which he knew they would).
Now Trump is going to go full on at the establishment.
This will get even uglier than it has been. The GOPe, Dems, MSM, etc. will all double their efforts to prevent this. The threat level from patriots just increased by 10x.

True, br...but Moore is like Rand Paul on steroids. Trump won't own Moore is He (Trump) goes the least bit soft/compromise. Brit Hume pointed out as much saying that what most defines Moore is "no telling what he will do".
Moore is going to turn up the heat on the Congress/Senate just like Trump turned it up on the NFL...by DEFINING the issues and forcing people to choose. He WILL change the dynamic up there. I would not be surprised if He backs Trump's 'end the Filibuster' move right up front. He'll run people like Orin Hatch, McConnell, Corker, et al out of DC, by forcing them to choose. Good riddance. We can ill afford any more enablers.

But that is what Trump really wants. He wants enough people in there speaking for their constituents and not DC. Sure, it might make it harder to get some things done but that is GOOD. Too many national laws are being made that should only be handled by the states anyway. Anything done at the federal level should have widespread support from all walks of life in this country.

This wasn't 27 dimensional parcheesi. It's fairly simple:
There were three legitimate GOP candidates. Trump wasn't going to support Mo Brooks because he didn't have a consistent record of kissing the ring and has a record of actual independent thought.
Trump literally didn't know Roy Moore's name as of this past Thursday. Seriously, he went on a local radio show and repeatedly called him "Ray."
Trump knew Strange and overestimated his advantage as an incumbent because Trump doesn't know anything about Alabama politics. Trump saw endorsing Strange the loyal incumbent as an easy way to get behind a sure winner and take some credit for the "winning."
He just misread the signs because he knew exactly as much about Alabama politics as you'd expect a Manhattan real estate developer to know.

President Trump HAD to support Strange, given that Strange’s vote could make the difference on ALL major bills for the balance of the year. Oppose Strange and you easily end up with another Obstructionist McCain. Trump gains nothing by supporting Moore. Moore will MAGA regardless because Alabama is full blown MAGA.
