This is a Tremendous Loss

Full disclosure - I have been attending LSU football games since the mid-1960's. I drive 925 miles round-rip to almost all home football games. I've supported every LSU coach (football, basketball & baseball). I was a big Les Miles supporter, but even I thought it was time for a change 2 years ago after we were promised one thing and delivered something different.
I was not happy about the Coach O hire and thought we settled on a coach that nobody else was after, but I have tried to be a Coach O supporter. However, I just don't get it. He needs a teleprompter to speak to the media and the fans. He over uses the word "tremendous" when describing every player on the the team. Tremendous means "very great in amount, scale, or intensity." He uses euphemisms to try to incite the fan base ("we will play with energy" "one team one heartbeat").
He cites statistics at his press conference and never speaks off the cuff. He is always on script. It is as if someone gives him a notebook or a binder before he speaks to public. (irony intended)
I am sure he is a very nice guy and I am sure he has several fans that want him to succeed, but last night was a prime example of why i feel that LSU made a mistake in hiring him. We are getting the same "speak" that Les said. Remember, I was a Les Miles fan.
"We are holding back the playbook." [don't you want to practice all of your plays against mediocre teams?]
"We are playing freshman." [Les Miles played more freshman each year than almost every program in the country, except possibly TCU]
"We lost too many starters to the NFL." [sound familiar?]
"We will have a 50/50 run/pass ratio." [i would settle for a 60/40 run/pass ratio - although I know last night we ran 58 plays and 29 were passes - 50/50, but what were our play ratios at halftime?]
"We will spread the ball around in multiple formations." [never seen this other than a lot of pre-snap movement that allows us to run up the middle with different alignments]
"We run more during the games because that it what the defense is giving us." [Miss State was packing the box and we still kept running]
"We don't need to practice our passing games against lesser opponents because we don't want to show future opponents our playbook." [enough said]
I look at the headlines in our local sports page today and see "..throws for 4 TD's", "...hurls 5 scores.", etc. I want us to play like we did against Rice when we won 77-0 in 1977 and never stopped throwing the ball. I want us to be a modern football team while playing with a strong defense. I want to see passes to the tight end, quick slants, audibles (when is the last time we had a QB that could even audible like Tommy Hodson?).
Yes, I am frustrated by last night. I was frustrated by all of my friends dogging Les Miles, even in 2011 when we had one of the most historic seasons in college football, except the last game, but we definitely settled on Coach O. His [our] team played without any energy and ran the same offense that we have seen for the last 5 years with most of the same coaches that Les Miles had already hired (except Canada). We are looking at LSU/Les Miles 1.0 (not 2.0 because that would denote an improvement over the prior version).
I will still drive 925 miles to watch LSU play. I will suffer through the season, but we are not a very good team. I am sad and embarrassed, until I realize it is a game played by 18-22 year olds and coached by people that are drastically overpaid. I have been through the Cholly Mac's, the Mike Archer's, the Curley Hallman's and the Gerry DiNardo's and I will survive.
This too shall pass (not literally, but figuratively), but (and this makes me unhappy to write this) this might be the first LSU coach that even I can't get behind.

It's really very simple.....our admin is too fuking dumb to hire a coach with pedigree and results.
What you want is what I want....and every Tiger fan wants. We won't get what we want until that retarded a-hole Alleva is gone...period.

You are spot on, listen you are preaching to the choir,
I 100% agree.

First off I would like to tell you are out of you freakin mind to travel that far more than twice a year to see a football game when it's on tv.

Well written and coherent post. I do think you need to give O time to fix it. He's not good optically but that doesn't mean he's not good at his job.

Good post - much more rational than most over the last 24 hours. I think it's still a little early to say O is totally incompetent, but we (me included, b/c I agree with you) are perfectly right to be very concerned.
I'm also worried that Canada is going to be another highly paid, low producing OC. Seems to be the norm for that position at LSU.

To be fair we are breaking records in that regards this year.
This is due to Miles' offense driving off many of our players and some players not taking school seriously.

This is the best post I've ever read on the rant. Well done WacoTiger!

Were you at the game in 1993, I think, when Florida beat us 58-3?
I only have to drive 220 miles round trip but I feel you. Recruiting is still "tremendous". We haven't hit rock bottom yet but I know we will still be there if we do.
Forever LSU!

Yes, you are preaching to the choir.
If LSU coaches would just try to do what they say they will do, that would be a helpful start. Miles assured us he would change the offense prior to last season, but clearly did not, so he was justifiably canned.
Matt Canada is supposed to open it up, run from different formations, use the spread, get our great athletes in permission to succeed, pass on any down and throw much more, but after three games, has not done that.
I do realize the offensive line is mediocre at best and they must improve for the offense to move the ball better, but at least Canada can add some more of those hundreds of wide open plays he allegedly knows.

Could not have been put any better than what you just did Waco. I admire you for driving from Waco to see this shitshow that's about to occur.

Miles post 2011 was crap....O is crap too.
LSU shouldn't settle for crap, but it appears that's Alleva's strategy when it comes to football.

Amen brother. I could have written most of that post. Very similar thoughts.
There is aconsistent thread on the rant of blaming O for every thing in the game. What I have not heard anything aboutis the rash of suspensions and the long list of transfers out. What the hellis going on insde the camp?

I don't like to linger on any loss - our fanbase does that far, far too much. However, this one is staying with me because it is probably the 2nd most significant loss in 30 years, probably only to the 58-3 (October 9th, 1993 - never forget).
Why? Because we just don't lose to MSU and when we do, it's by a single score. This was bad and the timing couldn't be worse.
Now - as I've been saying for almost 24 hours - we did lose a game by 4 TDs in 2001 and still won the conference - but I don't feel as confident about this team catching fire than I did about that team. Hope I'm just being pessimistic.

Many fans were not happy about Les Miles hire. After the 2007 NC we struggled and didn't get back to SEC Championship game until 2011. For years many of us knew Miles was not what LSU needed but those in charge kept upping his salary.
Last night reminded me of the 2011 NC Game in New Orleans where we never even scored against Bama and Miles never changed a thing, he could have put Lee in the game, he played favorites and was stubborn. So for several years we speculated over who we could get that would be a great coach. It was the very man that beat us last night and two years ago, Dan Mullen. He can take a class ranked 33rd on average vs. Michigan at 9 and and he was ranked Alabama at 1 and LSU around 3-7 and he develops these players into the positions he feels they are best. I don't dislike Orgeron he is a breath of fresh air from Miles weird coacheak by . Thing is why is he repeatedly over looked by everyone, and the development of his QB's and players, not to mention the great human being he is. Now I read that Texas A&M will likely go after Mullen at end of this year if they don't turn the corner. I believe Mullen is the best coach in the SEC behind Nick Saban. McIlwain, Muschamp, Sumlin, Malzahn, Smart??? Jones and Freeze had to cheat and Mullen still beat him. So this is not to criticize Coach O, his heart is all LSU. LSU got beat becase their coach had a solid game plan and a wish from all his players to beat LSU, mission accomplished. Think about what this man will do at a school he goes to where he can actually recruit out of his state and get quality 4/5 star players. I just wonder why Mullen is so overlooked and he wasn't good enough to be in the conversation as a coach at LSU. I personally think Aranda is fantastic and from early on Canada surely had a impact. But LSU players, coaches and fans never thought MSU would upset them. I knew 2 weeks ago they were a big threat to us and was praying it wouldn't be a game overlooked. I think the bad call on 1st touchdown and the 2 targeting calls and all the other fouls we committed along with no one thinking MSU can ever beat LSU. Our tigers quit. That my fellow tiger fans has changed by a coach that averages a 33rd in talent class in Div. 1 in SEC. He has taken them to a bowl game 7 straight years. His career record at MSU 63-42 playing in the toughest conference in the country.
I would love to know what others think of Dan Mullen.
