Too soon. A lot of baseball left.

At this point we're stuck with what he have. Liriano has the better stuff but it's not doing much for him. He's spent time as a reliever before and it didn't go well then either.
Liriano was an experiment to try to gain an upgrade over Sipp. It hasn't worked out. Like I say, you at least know Sipp has the capability to be a good reliever even though it hasn't showed in a while. So the next few weeks, give him the ball and see which guy to go with.
Someone posted a few weeks back that Sipp decided to throw his fastball on the same plane as 2015 (what took so long Tony?). Maybe that could help? Time to find out.

I don't think we have the one of white/kemp/fisher because we have Marwin.
Late inning defensively we go marisnick/maybin/springer
Bregman correa altuve marwin.
I think we are much more likely to carry both of peacock and Morton than another position player. The question to me is do they value jake over Martes right now. I think so but Martes when on is a difference maker in relief. Only thing I see consistency

I would be really surprised if we aren't carrying three catchers, allowing us to pinch hit with Gattis off the bench (or DH him) and pinch run for McCann
I think the question is if we carry 14 position players or 13. If we have 14 then both Marisnick and Maybin will be on there and there will be a surprise pitcher left off

Apologies to IamAG, I decided to look at remaining schedules for Astros and Indians, assuming the division titles are a given for both, to see if there might be an inherent advantage.
The remaining opponents for the Indians are a combined 176 games below .500.
The remaining opponents for the Astros are a combined 78 games below .500.
With the Astros playing better on the road this year, home and away for the last 24 games is probably irrelevant. So it would seem we have our work cut out for us.

That is why I don't think Martes makes it....too inconsistent, and you already have Harris, Gregerson, Clippard, Devenski, and Musgrove as right handed relievers.

Also, both Indians and Astros have 11 games remaining vs teams below .500

Martes has probably some of the best stuff in the pen but it's hard to say whether you can trust him in a high pressure playoff situation. Idk. He's been with the club since June...he's part of the future of the club and they might want him to take part in the experience now so that it's not foreign to him down the road.

Since they get to change the rosters after each series, and since one is a 5 game series and the others are 7 games, this could determine the dynamic of the rosters. I would think you could possibly get away with one less pitcher in a 5 game series, where you might want an extra pitcher for a 7 game series.
And I am not sure they carry 3 catchers...but it wouldn't be unheard of, either. I just don't know who you would leave off if you added a 3rd catcher (which I assume would be Centeno)

Also I look into Martes numbers since he moved into the pen after his last start
4.91 ERA is ugly but he's allowed a .230BAA and a .333 BAbip. 12.95 K/9. But the FIP is 3.87. So there's been a little bit of bad luck on his part. Do you trust the upside enough to carry him into a post season roster.

Giles was about as close to unhittable as a pitcher can get. His slider was filthy and his fastball was explosive.
This is great news. I passed out around the 6th inning last night.
I'm so ready to gear up for playoff ball.

It all depends on how they structure it. Most teams use 11 pitchers in the postseason. If McCullers is right, our division series rotation is locked in with DK, Verlander and McCullers. Then you carry Morton for long relief and to start if for some reason you need him. And I think Morton is that fourth starter in a 7 game series
You then have likely 7, maybe 8 slots for a reliever. Giles, Devo, Harris, Musgrove, Peacock and Gregerson are all locks IMO. That leaves one or two spots and you still have Clippard (who I think gets the nod over Martes) plus possibly a lefty. You also have McHugh, who may very well get left off the postseason roster.
I don't see Martes making it without an injury maybe two injuries. The above shows the flexibility we have now though with the Verlander trade

If mccullers can't go more than 4 innings I say move him to the pen for the rest of the year.
No, I say create a LMJ/Peacock tandem. Each can go 4 or 5 innings of good innings.

Yeah. If they're carrying 3 catchers then they will definitely be using 14 position players, so you're leaving off a pitcher. It will be interesting to see what relievers they carry though because there are a lot of options.

Unless LMJ shows up tonight and his next 2 starts, no way I use that combo over Morton/Peacock in a Game 3.
If my memory serves correct, LMJ has been in early trouble in every start since his first DL stint

If I were Hinch I'd set my rotation up for a 5 game series with Kuechal ,Verlander, McHugh, McCullers and Morton. In that order.
McCullers is electric when he is on, but can't get past the 5th. Kuechal and Verlander should put you in position to close it out in game 3. McHugh is more consistent and goes deeper in ballgames. Saving the pen for more critical games later in the series.

I would take martes over Gregerson

Man I was thinking about that earlier. I feel so bad for some of these guys that have been with the club for most of the season but won't make the postseason roster...specifically Fiers. He was such a huge help in June and July but there's obviously no room for him on a postseason roster since he's gone back to his old self
Has to be so hard for AJ to tell those guys they're staying home. Do not envy him one bit
It's probably a lot easier for Luhnow to remove the emotional aspect of it but for AJ...he's in the clubhouse and dugout with those guys for hours and hours everyday
ETA: Gregerson is another good example. He hasn't even been a big part of the bullpen for the most part but he's another example of possibly having to tell a veteran who has been in the clubhouse for years that he isn't making it. It's probably easier for Martes and the young guys cause you know they're going to be a big part of the future

It happened to someone a season before last. I don't remember who but the guy was a major part of the team and was left off post season roster
