I'm good with any wall.

As long as Mexico and not the taxpayers foot the cost.

I think it's dumb but as long as it's not my money who cares.

It is a wasteful remedy to a problem that could be easily solved other ways, but won't be. Thus, a wall is the most effective probable partial solution to the illegal immigration issue.

The wall is not just for physical purposes. It's also effective propaganda against people who wants open borders and out of control and unchecked illegal immigration and will be strong deterrent to them.

It seemed border security used to be one of the few things Dems and Repubs could actually agree on.

Right up until 2016 when it magically became racist to be in favor of it.

Are you saying that the next democrat POTUS can't simply have it torn down?

The fricking optics of that would be devastating.

The other things can be done without anyone even paying attention or noticing.

Man. I seriously 2nd and 3rd-guessed putting THAT in there, but I felt I had a substantive-enough OP to leave that dig in.

The reason I wanted to know thoughts on the wall was, and while I genuinely understand the over-arching issue of border security/laws on the books, I never once heard anyone specifically discuss "the wall" as all-important as Trump has. It is a small component as most of you have correctly pointed out, but not for Trump.

I honestly think, and some of you guys can tank for him all you want, that he just wanted a big tall wall built. Like one you see in those dystopian movies. He no doubt has been briefed since about the need for technology surveillance, drones, and the practicality of an invisible wall ever since. But I think the wall is/was Trump's Mount Rushmore. It really does a minimal amount on its own.

But considering some of the arguably hurtful and just plain bad ideas of past presidents, along with policies that have their name on it, maybe we should just let them all build something to be remembered by and then have them go on their merry way

Support border control but have doubts about the wall from a cost/benefit analysis.

Trump is going on about how much illegal immigration has already dropped so much in his term - it had nothing to do with the wall. Do more of whatever he's been doing and work on making *legal* immigration (not citizenship but work visas) something that is actually accessible.

I'm for border security, wall or otherwise.

Of course, southern border crossings are way down the list of things to be concerned about, but I'm not opposed to a wall.

Other "progressive" countries have stricter immigration laws than the US. Some even have walls, some will shoot you for entering their democratically free country illegally.

I would position the wall alongside the Rio Grande.

"Lib" here. We already have an expansive border wall. We didn't build It along the entire border because the rest of it runs through private land and difficult terrain, including the Rio Grande.

It's not pragmatic to build the rest. It will cost more than the estimates. It will take ages to complete. Lawsuits and more lawsuits. And you still won't get a true border wall because of the Rio Grande.

It is an expensive measure that does little to curb illegal immigration. It might alter how the illegal immigrants come here, but it will do little to stop them from coming.

I totally support rigorous control of the border.

I believe spending billions on a literal wall is foolish, because...

But yeah, the wall keeps getting higher.

Over 100 tunnels from the Mexican side found between 2001 and the time these photos were published...one tunnel a half mile long.

And cede the river to Mexico? Yeah...pretty sure that's not gonna happen.
