US box office suffers worst weekend in sixteen years as Hollywood's bleak summer continues

ComScore estimates that this will be the first summer in a decade not to cross $4bn in domestic ticket sales. The summer as a whole is running 14% behind last year with the deadly quiet August a big reason for this.

Yeah I saw this mentioned somewhere. The general agreed upon reason is no big new film came out as well as it being the weekend of Mayweather/McGregor which was watched by hundreds of millions.

I'd probably go see more movies if tickets were cheaper and I wasn't keenly aware of the fact that a movie in the theater is out for rental/purchase just 2-3 months later.
Why go pay (pre-snack prices) $20 to see CHIPs, $20 to see Alien Covenant, etc, etc when I can just wait a little bit, then rent them from redbox for $2 and watch from the comfort of my home.

Outside of a couple, the movies this summer have generally just stunk.
Hopefully, the Oct/Nov/Dec releases are better.

That isn't new.
There were no decent movies to go see. Simple as that.

I agree about that too, well, that's pretty much all year long it seems.
I think the time between leaving the theater and having home releases has shorten drastically over the past few years. Add that to the fall of high-priced rentals for low-priced redbox and people will continually stop going see films they otherwise might not thought twice about a decade or so ago.
I can see simultaneous theater and home releases for major pictures happening within the next several years.

I think I only watched three movies this summer: Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Dunkirk.

This is why I believe MoviePass will succeed.
This weekend is also what happens when the Mouse shifts the major SW and Marvel releases to the holidays. GotG2 was already an afterthought in people's minds once summer actually arrived. It was all about Wonder Woman, after Memorial Day.

I feel like this summer has been better than recent years. Between Planet of the Apes, Wonder Woman, GotG2, Spiderman, and Aliens, I feel that the blockbusters have been as good as expected. It seems the past few years have been let downs in terms of expectations/hype vs reality with these types of movies.

Movie tickets are getting expensive. And concessions doesn't help. If Hollywood wants Americans to part ways with their hard earned dollars, they have to up their game. Otherwise, people are finding other cheaper, more efficient ways of entertainment.

Nothing new at the theaters last weekend. I saw Wonder Woman again. And the theater was half full for that, three months after it opened.

The blockbuster movies were super concentrated. Dunkirk, baby driver, Spider-Man, and War for the Planet of the Apes all came out in consecutive weeks. Most people won't go see movies 4 weeks in a row, so I doubt they maxed out on those profits. And then there were no other good movies after those, so not surprised we're seeing slow weeks now. A poor Hollywood release schedule screwed them all, and I'm fine with that

normally summer movies suck all the dicks, but this summer/late spring actually had some legit flicks. maybe that's why the box office took a hit, the masses want the same stupid shite. some of my favorites from the last few months:

I feel like the only movies that get marketing hype are recycled ones (comic book movies basically).
Dunkirk is the only one of those I've heard of.

Hollywood has conditioned people to only watch franchise movies. Non franchise movies don't get a lot of hype. They've gotten lazy and started putting out crappy movies thinking people would see it based on name alone. The Mummy and Power Rangers both bombed, Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean both underperformed. Not sure what expectations were for The Dark Tower but it certainly could have been better and made more money.
