If you take away Southern history, what is left to distinguish us as Southerners?

Take away the Confederacy, all the antebellum south motif, Dixie land, the resistance against the north..... what is left? What do we cling to that makes us Southerners? Fried food? Accents? Heat?
I grew up in a time when being a Southerner still mattered. We didn't own slaves (thank God), but there was still an identity. Culture and history are interdependent. Take away one and the other dies. I think many in the younger generation don't give two shits about that.
