Does It help that BYU will have played 1 season Game

Before playing LSU? Does that give them any type of advantage?
Posted on 8/16/17 at 2:13 pm to JustLSUit
Absolutely. But LSU is still much better.

It is largely a myth that teams "improve the most" from game 1 to game 2.
Did Georgia look better vs nicholls state than they did vs North Carolina last year?

It gives BYU a huge advantage. I still expect LSU to win but you can't put a value on real live game experience.

Yes, but not enough to matter
Posted on 8/16/17 at 2:17 pm to JustLSUit
Yes. They say the biggest improvement in a team is between games 1 and 2. I'm not sure that's accurate but it's a common thought.

Not if their QB tears an ACL....

Conventional wisdom is that your team improves the most from the first game to the second game. I think that's largely true unless the either opponent is particularly out of your league, one way or another. I don't think you learn much or improve from a highly lopsided (not result, but overall talent) contest.
Having said that, if BYU avoids the injury bug, they should gain at least a slight advantage in having played a live game before we do. Perhaps more than slight. However, I don't think that will affect the outcome.

You can look at this in a couple of ways. Yes it gives them an advantage because they can play a game while getting some wrinkles out.
Then you could also say, LSU has an advantage because we focus on BYU only. LSU can start game planning when ever they feel they are ready. BYU needs to focus on another team before LSU, so will only give BYU one week to prepare for these athletes. That's going to be rough to do IMO. We'll see

No,Why you ask
1. BYU will have a chance of injuring players...yes i know LSU can injure players too but Games are much more violent than practice.
2. LSU has way more talent than BYU.
3. LSU will have a game to scout BYU and know exactly what their players do and have a game plan that will be unstoppable.
i understand they get a game to get the wrinkles out. Well i am confident enough that LSU will be able to do exactly that against LSU's defense in practice.
The answer is a clear no it doesnt help BYU in any shape or form.

BYU fan here and you guys are crazy if you don't think it's a HUGE advantage for BYU to have a cupcake game first. But a bigger advantage IMHO is that we're getting you on your first game. We've had success against new coaches and systems early in the season, ask Mike Riley at Nebraska, Mike Leach at WSU, and Charlie Strong at Texas. 3 recent examples of bigger programs from P5 conferences with better recruits that would have probably had different results had we faced them a little later in the year.

It's a big advantage. The only negative is injuries.
Portland State isn't good enough to expose any potential weaknesses and BYU can work out all of the kinks without showing any blitzes or go to plays on offense.
It's a pretty chickenshit move on their part scheduling a game before a "kickoff" classic.
LSU beat Ms State on the road in 2015 after State played a game and LSU had their home opener canceled due to lightning.

It absolutely helps them from a tune up stand point and allows them to answer personnel questions.
The one disadvantage is that it gives LSU new game film to work with, while LSU's offense will remain a relative unknown.
I expect our defense to be stout, so this game doesn't really scare me.

This is the biggest concern i have about the BYU game. It was a huge advantage for VTech that year they beat us in the opener.

Wait why are they playing a game before us?
Posted on 8/16/17 at 4:44 pm to JustLSUit
yes

How many posts are we going to have on this??

I would feel much better if we played byu midseason after we ironed all the wrinkles and our experiance has caught up with our talent. Byu will have older guys that would be tough to push around at our best. I think we will win.....hell maybe even blow them out with talent. But i wouldnt expect anything less than a grueling win.

Nobody knows until we actually play the game on September 2nd. Hence, why even ask such an incredibly stupid question? Are you bored? stupid? or both bored and stupid?

Definitely an advantage for BYU
