You are a fricking idiot. Regular season is so easy. That's why only two teams have won 116 games. Easy to talk hindsight but if they win the World Series, they are the greatest team of all time. Also, talk about meh pitching staff? They damn near had three 20 game winners.

01 M's win the WS, they are better than the 98 Yanks. They didn't so, it really don't matter. Talking about not being as good as their record is stupid though. In baseball, you win that many games for a reason.

I remember when the Yankees took the first two in Seattle and after the game Sweet Lou guaranteed they'd be back for game 6.

Before you guys start asking questions let me start by saying We’re gonna be back here (Seattle) for Game 6, I told the people out there the same thing, I guarantee you we will be back here for Game 6.

quote:and? those four starters i highlighted accumulated 12 WAR. the yankees had more than that between mike mussina and pettite. not to mention roger clemens. the a's had more than that between tim hudson and barry zito. and then they also had mark mulder. when you take the average of freddie garcia's fip- and era- you get 75.5. thats a decent number, freddie garcia had a decent year. but that yankee team had three players who had similar averages and mussina was noticeably better (69)

so yea, freddie garcia had a nice year but the rest of that rotation was, maybe not suspect, but definitely not as good as it could have been in hindsight. especially compared to some of their competitors in those AL playoffs

Baseball playoffs are a crapshoot. Dodgers are the favorites, but they're far from being a sure thing, it's just the nature of the game.

Which is yet another reason to despise the second WC. It'll be a crime if some 84 win team with a negative run differential ends up knocking out a 100+ win Astros team in the ALDS but it's a very real possibility. Even the four team playoff system baseball had from 1995-2011 probably had too many teams making the playoffs but it's way better than what they have now.

So the Astros peaked....crashed.....and have time to peak again just in time for the playoffs!? SWEET!!!!

Iirc growing up there were 2 divisions in each league. The playoffs were simply the division winners against each other, and the winner went to the World Series.
I'd be fine if that was the current format.

If we could get a balanced schedule I'd be more ok with it.

So, you are saying they can win that many games without a "whole team"? 1-6 in the order was the best in baseball. Bullpen was lights out. Only weak part was the starters but a 1-2-3 of Garcia, Sele, and Moyer was nothing to scoff at, at the time. Garcia was a solid ace. Sele could have ace'd for 2/3 of the league. Jamie Moyer was Jamie Moyer.

ARod wasn't even on the Mariners that year. Bret Boone had the best overall year of any player. You don't win 116 games with a +300 run differential with an incomplete team and mediocre players. That Mariners team had one of the best defenses ever.

The frick?
A-Rod wasn't on the Mariners that year.
John Olerud, Mike Cameron, Bret Boone, and Kazuhiro Sasaki are mediocre players nobody remembers?
Also, they had 8 all stars that year. You don't know what the hell you are talking about.

They were so memorable I thought A Rod played for them... And you just listed non hall of fame quality players who just happened to have career years.
Posted on 8/16/17 at 6:39 pm to chalmetteowl
Not being in the HOF doesn't make a guy mediocre. Who gives a shite if a guy had a career year? We are talking about how good a team was THAT specific year.
Maybe, just maybe, you don't know as much as you think you know?
Like who the hell forgets a guy like John Olerud when he was well known for having to wear a batting helmet when he was in the field? Sasaki is another that baseball fans from that era should know b/c of how he came from Japan, tore shite up, and went back after just 3 years b/c he was homesick.
shite, just the fact that you didn't know A-Rod had moved onto the Rangers alone is enough to completely discount your opinion of that team.

Then why did the flame out?
They were rocking during the final of the regular season but the cop out claim is they peaked too soon.
You sir, are the idiot. They barely made it past the first round and got humiliated by the more talented Yankees. That's a fact.
Mariners weren't the greatest team of all-time that inexplicably lost - because what?
They forgot how to play baseball in the post-season? Peaked too soon, what a fricking cop out - they were rocking in the regular season toward the end of the year.
But guess what, you play better teams in the playoffs.
The regular season isn't the playoffs you fricking moron. You are playing the cream of the crop - and the Yankees were flat-out a better team than the Mariners...the Mariners were not as good as their record...otherwise they'd be GOAT right?
Of the Top 10 modern baseball regular season records...only the Mariners didn't make it to the World Series...everyone else is Lost or Won WORLD SERIES!
That's a pretty big indictment.

Bad playoff series happen all the time though. Better teams can and do lose all the time in the playoffs across all sports. Not making the WS sucks but it's not as big of an indictment as you are making it out to be.

Not once did I say they peaked too soon or that they were the greatest team of all time. I said that if they won the WS, they are the greatest of all time. You must have been shitting in pampers in 01 because there is no fricking way you watched them. There is no way you can call them mediocre when only 1 other team, in the history of baseball, has accomplished a 116 win season. I will assume you look at everything in hindsight and spew retarded bullshite that you know nothing about.
