My 11 year old kid finished rock camp today. He played drums on a cover of "Crazy Train' by Black Sabbath, "You Can Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac, played bass on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by The Beatles, bass on "Jesus Just Left Chicago' by ZZTop, and sang" I Want to Be Sedated" by the Ramones and "Song 2" by Blur.
That's awesome he's being encouraged at a young age. When I tried to play drums in middle School, the shitty teacher wouldn't let me, and actually told me I didn't have the natural coordination. But I've played at jazz fest twice, so frick that guy.

There isn't much good electrified music nowadays. But there's lots of good a acoustic music. And there's always funky stuff coming out of Nola.

This thread is almost as good as the once a year "It's called the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Not the Rap Hall a Fame!"

It's devastating to the African American music community that's for sure. It's killing blues, jazz, soul. BB King said before he died that when he looked out into the audience all he saw was white people. All the young black kids wanted to be were rappers. He said they were like McDonald's. There's one on every corner but that doesn't mean they're good for you.

To be fair, they list R&B and hip hop together which really widens the genre list way out. Looking at the top 10 albums they have on one of the links, I wouldn't be surprised if Bruno Mars and Weeknd wasn't listed under r&b/hiphop.
20 years ago hip hop was a lot of fun and really good. Eminem lead the charge in the early 2000s. These days, I don't see the appeal at all in the hip hop bunch, I can't list an artist out now that I could sit down and listen to more than a song or two of.
On the other side of it, rock has been dying out for awhile. Bands like Foo Fighters are going by the waste side and legends are staying around milking old stuff like Vedder and Dave Matthews (and I've been a fan of Matthews for a long time). Right now, rock lacks two major things that is keeping it down. Number 1 is radio play, pop gets the airtime and number 2 is innovators in the genre. They don't have the singer/songwriters of old that are leading the way.

quote:And that, my friends, is a sad commentary. Hip-hop is a sanctuary for people with low cognitive skills and a chronic inability to articulate their needs. It's anarchy set to music.

This is true. Music, whether R&B, Rock, Country lost it's soul.

Just kidding! That's awesome, actually.

The record companies killed rock. You have to have mass appeal to make it these days. This has diluted rock music into a type of pop music.

It goes in waves. During the 60s and 70s good music was front and center, then during the 80s it was cheesy pop and metal that was on the surface and you had to dig a little to find the good stuff. Then during the 90s the good stuff was nearer the surface and on the radio. Now, we're back to surface cheese and you have to dig for the good stuff. I'm just too lazy to do it so I dig back into the 70s and late 60s for stuff I missed or ignored.

Disco was the first wave of the assault on Rock. Alternative US bands and British New Wave bands carried the 80's, along with a few Metal groups. Rock saw a US revival in the 90's but I think there's really only so much creativity to go around, and people are dealing with first world problems which don't translate to teenage angst like it once did.

I first became aware of rap music in 1981 or so. I was not very impressed with what I heard. I figured it would last a 2-3 years and fade away like so many fads before it...oops.
For those that wanna rock, check out the band Airbourne.

I don't know what's worse, rap or white suburban college kids that like to discuss rap.

quote:Which one of those artists have come out in the last 10 years? Most of the rock bands you listed are on life support and the members have to carry oxygen tanks on stage bc they're so old. So yes, rock is dead, regardless of how many list you show with top concerts of bands that are 10+ years old.
Yeah...rock is dead.

Do you really expect them to identify with it?

I actually liked rap when I was in my 30s.
Until I tried to go to a rap concert. Then things changed after that.
Now I recognize it for what it is: no talent arse clowns that can't play real music to save their lives. Is some of it good? Oh yeah. Is it catchy? Oh yeah. Does it take talent to make it? LOL

Rap music is ear cancer
The early stuff like NWA was good but it's all 100% trash now

The same people who run Hollywood and produce the filth it produces today are the same ones who own the record labels
They have a vested interest in producing crap to dumb down western men and women
