Why do hotel rooms not have ceiling lights?

Seems like every hotel room i've stayed in, fancy hotel or not, has several lamps but never in ceiling lights. I would think they could save a little money by getting rid of one or two or five of the lamps and have one ceiling light/ fan and a lamp on each side of the bed....

Construction is faster and cheaper without them.

Cost.

Less expensive to not have to run electrical wire for x number of hotel rooms.

So that's why you see table and floor lamps.

I want to start a hotel chain with ceiling fans and overhead lights. Might make a million, might go broke.

Because the ceiling light is on a circuit, most likely not by itself.

Doing any maintenance beyond changing the bulb would require shutting off the circuit, which is probably more than ONLY that room.

Most rooms I've been in have 2-3 plugs at most. And the lamp on the nightstand these days has a USB port or another set of plugs on them for phones to charge. No need to run another switch and wiring for ceiling lights. Even in a renovated room this summer down at The Grand Hotel, there was one ceiling light and it was over a table and chair in the corner.

Wiring on the wall can supply two rooms. Wiring in the ceiling can only supply one.

I didn't know I had to do maintenance on my ceiling light fixtures. How often and what should I do?

A number of reasons people have already mentioned--it costs more to run wiring through the ceiling, it's harder to perform maintenance on a circuit in the ceiling, wiring in the wall can supply multiple rooms. Additionally, with ceiling lighting the contractor would have to install fire rated hats on recessed lighting which is an added expense.

Yep, the cost of insurance to cover the hazard created by ceiling fans might make you go broke.

Because Tom Bodett said he'd leave the light on as long as it wasn't a fricking ceiling light.
