"The left continues to eat itself" - Sam Harris leaves Patreon

I noticed the other day that Patreon cancelled the account of a conservative journalist - Lauren Southern - without warning, and without, as they stated, any possibility of appeal. Now, I’m not taking a position with respect to Southern - I’m actually not really familiar with her work - but this happened the same day that Richard Dawkins was deplatformed at UC Berkeley; and this is an action that should go down in the annals of [politically correct] insanity. This was right after his book, “The Selfish Gene,” was voted the most inspiring science book of all time in a public poll that was commissioned by the Royal Society, so the left continues to eat itself. These events are part of a wave of deplatformings and demonitizations on YouTube and elsewhere, and it’s being driven almost entirely by leftist confusion about free speech. I consider myself well left-of-center on almost every topic, but this is just the Wild West out here in terms of people organizing campaigns of protest against totally legitimate and blameless scholars and journalists and scientists, and I realized that I just can’t afford to have this podcast be even slightly vulnerable to the whims of third-party.

I know many on this board revere Sam.
Interesting news given the backdrop of Silicon Valley getting in bed with the regressives to stamp out dissent.

Sam is an interesting character that I've just recently started following. I don't share his political worldview for the most part but I really like his logical, analytical thought process and discussion style. He's a liberal minded guy that I actually enjoy listening to at the moment and seems to offer some sincere, civil intellectual debate. That has been vastly lacking from the left as of late IMO.

And he's considered brilliant. I suppose so if brilliance is judged on one's ability to deny the obvious, lie to yourself, tip toe away from uncomfortable truths and impress those who want to be impressed with erudite speech.

Living off that trust-fund money

Patreon also shut down the account of Tim Pool and he is fairly neutral but has made some videos about fake media and liberals.

Christopher hitchens had charm and even when he was being a prick you couldn't help but like him. he thought interesting things, said interesting things, and said them in an interesting way.
sam harris is intelligent and thoughtful (most of the time) but i'd rather watch paint dry. Oh noooz, he moved his podcast to some other hosting site...stop the press, sam.
ETA: I see it's a site where people just give you money oh gosh, i'm going to go stand on this street corner and beg for money, frick you guys. you'd think a guy who sells a bunch of books could afford to do his own podcast...or just simply sell subscriptions.

What in god's holy name are you blathering about?

Well you're of course entitled to your opinion, but you then proceed to argue that he isn't interesting because he isn't an entertaining character like Hitchens. I don't determine interest in sociopolitical analysis purely off of how entertaining someone is.
In fact, in Sam's case, I actually find it a bit refreshing that he is not interested in being a bombastic character. I think what he actually says is interesting. That he doesn't put in a theatrical show while doing so does not detract from that. Perhaps that's one of the problems with popular discourse today on both sides. We value entertainment over content and analytical discourse.

popular discourse
unless your audience has a shared intensity, passion or interest that's the golden rule of communication.
it's impressive that his a-z thought process isn't a straight line but multiple tangents and doesn't get off track...but to hear him do it for sometimes hours on end? no thanks.

Dawkins and Dennett are hard scientists, with decades spent studying and advancing the science of evolutionary biology. Dennett in particular is violently anti-philosophy and works to remove philosophical questions or conclusions from his work.
Hitchens of course is the last great public intellectual cum provocateur of the 20th century, the gold standard for ruthless, make-you-feel-bad-for-being-wrong debate.
Harris studied meditation in Tibet and shite. He is wholly concerned with philosophical and ontological questions, which makes him not only more boring but particularly burdensome to matters of actual policy. He has the intellectual chops, but he focuses them on the most inane shite IMO.

Popular discourse to mean the broad discussion of sociopolitical affairs in this country. Whether it's a lecture or a debate, a podcast or interview, it's all a part of the popular discourse.

Are you just looking for an argument?
I get it, you think he's boring. That has nothing to do with why I find him interesting, as I've already said. That he earns income on writing and speaking doesn't mean he needs to take on an "entertainment" demeanor. I concede that entertaining people get more acclaim and viewers. So what?

This mob mentality of attacking viewpoints you don't like until you silence them is incredibly dangerous and goes against everything classic liberalism stands for.

The Right has been eating itself for decades now. They're also in control of all three branches of government...

that's more of the right being a fractured base
although it appears the DEMs are finally facing this issue now but just don't discuss it publicly. they still vote in line

I did not know this. I can at least see the poor excuse they gave for kicking Southern off as an attempt to remain impartial, weak as that attempt may be. However, what could they have possibly given as a reason to kick Pool off except ideological reasons? I'm gonna have to go search for this.

On behalf of my fellow members of the Left I must ask -- who is Sam Harris?
Also -- what is Patreon?
Also -- what is Patreon?

no, you have some holier than thou "maybe that's what's wrong with this country people prefer bombast over intellectualism" based reasoning.
as if sam harris isn't a guy who gets paid to entertain people.
you get his online beefs and debates with crazies are his way of making himself more interesting, right? I mean, he didn't say anything new or insightful, but ben Affleck's reaction to him sold him and made him. in that way, he makes himself interesting, but it's a magician's trick.

I don't see the argument. Personally I find a Steven Crowder to be more extreme than Lauren Southern, not that I'm saying either should be kicked off of Patreon.
