If I go cheap with 40Mbps from ATT, am I too cheap?

Bought a small single family home, all we do is stream Netflix Hulu and ESPN, no cable. Can I get by with ATT's 40 Mbps package? Do I need a higher powered router (devices will be within 15 feet through a wall).
Appreciate any advice, trying to cut costs at home.

No, that should be fine, and you might be able to go lower depending on how many people you have connected at a time.

40 Mbps is fine for most streaming. I get by with PSVue and multiple iDevices simultaneously on 50 Mbps.
Shouldn't need any special router if it's only 15 ft. Unless it's a filled cinderblock wall or something ridiculous.

How many streams will you have going at a time?

How many people are in your house? My parents have U-Verse and the 18 Mbps package and it's more than enough for their needs. You'll be fine with 40 Mbps.

I went from 100mbps cable internet to 45mbps uverse and there's barely a discernible difference. The only thing I notice is large files take a little longer to download.
Everything else is the same- loadtime of websites, steaming video quality, etc.
Agree that even 18mbps would be fine.

I have the 30Mbps from ATT and that was as cheap as i could go.
We can stream 2 devices and have a few others browsing the web with no problems.
At standard def the stream is only around 1M/stream. Where 4k needs around 5M/stream.
So when people pay for 100M service I do not see why they need to steam 20 4k movies at once. That much bandwidth usage and the family needs other hobby's.

It depends on how many devices are streaming at once
40 is plenty

The wife and I home office, and we both use VPN for company servers, but when we're not on VPN we both use multiple computers, sometimes we are both hosting WebEx sessions.
At night, kids are likely on yheir computers or tablets, one is likely gaming, and the wife and I may watch different shows on different televisions (which are using PSVue) and usually working on a laptop or tablet at the same time.
I like having headroom, so have a 200 mb service.
