Seems in MS the gangs are very tied in with chicago.
Work with a guy that lives around Meridian, and he used to be able to fly from Meridian to our work destination. Not anymore. He now has to fly outta Jackson due to the Meridian flight dedicated to Chicago

This is actually true. . It is too violent and disorganized.
There have been some people that have risen to the top in the last 30 years in the drug trade. (since the Marcello family moved on from violent crime)
New Orleans has always been a closed shop, dating back to the early 20th century. Even if a made guy wanted to come to New Orleans for Mardi Gras he needed permission from the Marcello family. When the national gangs started spreading across the country in the 80s. It was quickly shut down in New Orleans, some put the credit on the 'Gotti Boys' others credit the NOPD, some say the Italian mafia had a hand it as well. There is documentary about it.
It was likely a combination of the three. Now when they talk about the NOPD shutting down the national gangs, it wasn't because of good police work. It was the NOPD arrested the out of state gang members and instead of bringing them to the police station would bring them to the local gangs.

How do/did gangs and The mafia coexist in cities like Chicago and new york?
Big organized crime working with small organized crime, buying and selling, hired muscle, etc.

There's a really good podcast called Crimetown about the mafia in Providence, RI. Worth a listen to get an idea of how powerful the mob was in the Northeast.

You really dont know what you are taking about. Do a little research and you will find that the Russians scams and rackets are immensely more sophisticated than anything the old mafia ever did.
The mafia would get together and play poker and drink. The Russians get together and have chess tournaments while reading the WSJ.

Of course the scams now are more sophisticated. That comes with the times and technology(ie. the internet)

Lol ok.
Fwiw, 90% of the organized people are not sitting there reading the wsj, studying the stock market, or playing high level chess. If they were that smart and sophisticated, they would be making money in legal ways.

It's an inside VS outsiders thing. They always sode with the one they more closely identify with.
It can cross financial, familial, and racial barriers.
I always found that interesting actually.
I've seen NOLA black guys join NOLA white guys kicking the shite out of white sunglass wearing chalmations.
I've had a heroin fauxbeau try to rob me and had a black dude knock the ever living piss out of him because he thought my suit was bad arse
Alternately had two black guys consider jumping in when some POS hunny tried to rob me and I kicked the shite out of him. If my girlfriend at the time not drawn my gun, things would have gone south real fast.

They didn't. The mafia ruled. It's a shame nobody took over for Carlos Marcello. New Orleans would be a safer place.

This is true. Even MS13 tried to move into Nola after Katrina, but were ran off by the locals
Oh no MS-13 is very prevalent in Orleans Parish today. They proliferated post-K when hispanics were being targeted by local African american neighborhood gangs and fought back hard. Mexican Mafia also has a strong presence and organized but unlike the black gangs they are organized.

They are. I remember working at a grade school on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish in the 1990s. We had talks from sheriff's deputies in the gang unit as far back as 1995 or 1996. They were here, then. Crips, Bloods, LKs, but we didn't see much of them.
I saw the maps, my house is on one of 'em's turf, but don't remember which. But it wasn't a stronghold, and J.P. pretty much kept them well in check.
As for New Orleans, I can believe that the local guys might have told them to piss off, and succeeded.

The OT Baws proliferated though and command the local Sonics so there is organized crime. We even had a Judge on our payroll until the Feds took him down.

Because Louisiana thugs bend the knee to no one. They are seriously ruthless. They sent the murder rates skyrocketing in Houston, Atlanta and Mobile post Katrina
