Just getting back to playing regularly after a brief hiatus. Looking to replace my (way)outdated x-22's. Ive always been a Callaway guy through the bag but im not insistent on replacing with Callaways. I'm a consistent 12, driver swing speed of 100, on average, and I carry my 7 about 160 on a good strike. Any of you have any opinions on a good GI/player's iron to try out? I've browsed the Apex,M2,and AP2 offerings.
Update...I pulled the trigger on a new set of Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, 4-GW, 95 F4 Recoil shafts, .50" long, 2*up. I'm very much looking forward to gaming these!

I play the 15 apexs, I like them.
Most of the new irons are the same. You just need to look at them and hit them. It's all about confidence.

Are the x-22's really that outdated? That what I game. Looks like they came out around 2009, so around 8 years old. Have irons changed that much in 8 years?

quote:Yes and no. Weight is still transferred as much as possible to the outer portions of the head, but now tungsten is used heavily (get it??). Lofts are jacked as well to increase distance on a 7 iron which is basically the old 6. So really, just some extra forgiveness with the newer clubs. Nothing crazy.

I just bought the new Srixon 565s.
I tested those, the M2s, and new Mizunos. All statistics were similar, so I went with what I liked standing over best. Those Srixon irons are sexy AF.

Did you get fitted? Where? I am planning on getting fitted and these are the irons I am interested in the most because I prefer a thin top line but would like a more forgiving iron:

Golfdealsandsteals.com has 3-PW Adams XTD Forged irons with stiff Dynamic Gold shafts for $299.00 right now. Really good looking and well received irons, came out in 2014/2015. It's a CB/MB style set but supposedly still offer good forgiveness...plus they're forged. May be worth looking into.

If you are a consistent 12 the AP1 may be the way to go as opposed to the AP2. Little more forgiving with a wider sole and larger face.

I'm playing the 765 in the 4-5 irons, and the 965 6-PW. Love them.

These will likely be my next irons. Did you think about mixing the 565s and 765s?

Why is this seemingly farfetched? The AP1 is the more forgiving club.

It is, but a blanket statement, you are a 12 play the AP1 is incorrect. I'm a 12. The Ap1 is way too bulky and would not fit my swing at all.

Im missing the part where I said it "is definitely" the way to go. It was a suggestion to look into it. I didn't say if you are a 12 you play the AP1 only implied that the more forgiving iron "may be the way to go"

I see a lot of 15-20's playing AP2's too
The argument kind of makes itself

A vast majority of golfers play clubs that look better or they saw pros using instead of playing what would benefit their game. Nothing quite as painful as watching a 10+ handicap swipe away at a set of blades.
There's no such thing as a club being "too bulky" for your swing. You just don't like the way it looks or don't want to be seen playing those clubs at that point.
