Remember when Rouses started cockblocking Izzos because they got mad a manager at the Lafayette store was literally making burritos in the Rouses burrito bar with an Izzo's recipe book?
Just in case you forgot...
Just in case you forgot...

The suit alleges the actions were in retaliation for a 2012 incident involving an Izzo’s restaurant manager, who was fired from his position and went to work in the burrito bar of a Rouses Supermarket in Lafayette, taking an Izzo’s proprietary recipe book with him. A suit filed by Izzo’s in 2012 against the employee alleges the Lafayette Rouses used those recipes at its burrito bar. According to court documents, Izzo’s won a court order to go into the supermarket and retrieve the recipe book.

“At that point, Izzo’s believed its conflict with Rouse’s was concluded,” a written statement released today by Izzo’s says. “However, Izzo’s recently discovered that Rouse’s has been coercing property owners and developers to exclude Izzo’s from opening new restaurants throughout various parishes in Louisiana.”
quote:
Copies of the lease agreements between Rouses and the three shopping centers filed as exhibits with the lawsuit do contain exclusionary provisions, specifically forbidding the landlords of the three developments from leasing to Izzo’s. The leases do not exclude any other fast-casual Mexican or burrito restaurants. “Landlord shall have no right to lease or sell any portion of the shopping center to Izzo’s or any affiliate or related party,” the Rouses lease with Juban Crossing reads.
quote:
Izzo’s is seeking damages in excess of $10 million.

So you are telling me that most of their grocery stores suck and they are a bunch of scum bags?
I heard that was why Izzos didn't get a spot in Juban Crossing.

Guess it was too late in P'ville since the Izzo's was already there?

Izzo's is fricking terrible.

That's exactly why. In fact, the original plans had an "Izzo's" written onto the architectural page. Rouses went to them and told them if Izzos was in, they were out.
Now there's a Moe's there.
It's so petty, it makes me doubt the integrity of Rouses. So much so that I'd rather not shop there. Whether you're an Izzo's fan or not - is it really worth it for Rouses to get into a pissing match with them.. all in public?

Totally disagree. Rouses has waaaaaay more choices than Leblanc's did. I got prime steaks there the other day. PRIME.
Take a look at those "prime" steaks again next time. If you think the marbling of those things is enough to qualify as prime I've got a bridge to sell you. As a point of comparison, go to Calandro's and pick up a prime ribeye, then go find one at Rouse's. Night and day difference.

Very interesting. I don't remember any of the rouses in lafayette having burritos. This must not have lasted long
The rouses location in the cbd does have a decent to mediocre burrito bar.

I didn't read more than page 1, but i agree with OP. I really liked leblancs, but I'm done with rouses. Its on my way home, but I've changed my shopping routine to go to whole foods for daily needs items during my lunch break now. Very unfortunate. I was excited about rouses. The produce and meat have been mediocre at best most of the time.

Have you worked for him? I did for two years in high school, as did many of my friends in high school. The way he treats his employees is indefensible by any metric. I don't treat my adult employees the way he treats high school aged kids.
sounds like you got stuck on chicken salad duty and couldn't handle it. If you lasted 2 years it couldn't have been that bad. My boss in high school was a prick. I called him a-hole all the time but not to his face. To his face I called him dad.
My good old friend Phil has worked for him for over 20 years every morning of the week. He doesn't have a problem with him. Buck up Junior. Chalk it up to character building.

I quit shopping at Rouses the meat kept spoiling even though the expire date was 3-6 days out. One day I bought it, threw it in the fridge for the next day. Opened and it was rank, after several bad experiences I quit shopping for meats in Rouses.

The independent grocery stores (Hi Nabor, Reeves, Calandro's, LeBlanc's Matherne's, Dorignac's, Rouses, etc.) in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area actually have a disproportionately high market share relative to other similarly sized cities.

Well, it does rhyme with Louses.
Seriously, I'm pretty hardcore about grocery shopping. I cook a lot and I've rarely been able to get what I need without hitting three stores... and doing that on a regular 2-3 times a week basis. I thought Leblanc's Drusilla was pretty great when it opened but the high-end and expensive stock was very quickly replaced with the more affordable. I was done when Rouses took over. After giving virtually every store a shot, I've resigned to Albertsons as best for the main list, then produce markets and specialty types for the rest. Granted, Albertson's is high and still drops the ball occasionally but by far the best big chain store IMO.

I live a mile from the one on Drusilla and drive regularly to the one in Denham or on Antioch.

Honestly, this is my experience with them too. And I really do not see the quality everyone talks about when it comes to meats. Rouses has other good qualities, but meat is not one of them.

They don't buy from AG because they got booted out by the other original families that started AG. They wanted another tier added to the agreed to pricing tiers just for them (Rouses). When the others (Matherne, Calandro, LeBlanc, Crifasi) refused, old man Rouse left in a huff, sued, and has been on a vendetta ever since to put all those families out of business. The Matherne's on Bluebonnet was a big plum because now they will have a store literally in the front yard of the AG distribution center. A big FU to the others.

See, you've no idea what you're talking about. I wasn't on chicken salad duty. No bag boy/stock boy did that. The only people who made the chicken salad were a select few women in the deli.
You're refuting what I'm saying based on assumptions you've made based off loose associations you have. I'm telling you what I've seen and experienced personally.
You can "chalk it up" to whatever you want (since you've absolutely no idea what you're talking about anyway), but there's a distinction between working your employees hard and what he does.
I lasted there for two years because I kept my head down and did my job, and I'm not a quitter; that's what my dad taught me, and I never felt the need to call him an a-hole to his face or otherwise.

I don't care if Mr. Calvin eats puppies for dinner. His chicken salad is awesome.
