We literally just bought a car online like Amazon. It was surreal. I already had financing, but we bought it without ever interacting with a dealer...pick it up mid September.
Strange days.

Instead of getting a 'deal' on shite you don't want, may as well just pay for what you do.
Whatcha getting?

they often commit fraud, get caught by the lender, the dealer says we fired the salesman, then they go work for another dealership under the same umbrella (ray brandt toyota to dodge, for example)

This guy has definitely been around the car business. It is the scummiest business that exists on the planet.

researched the trim and features of the exact truck I was going to buy and how much it was going to cost me while giving them a 1% profit.
So, you wanted a business to make a whole $500 on the purchase of a $50,000 vehicle? Or $350 on a $35,000 vehicle? How generous of you.
Second, you likely have no clue what % profit the dealership makes. Did you consider hold back in calculatING the 1%? Quota bonuses from the manufacturer? There is a lot of secret money that the customer doesn't know, and not all of those secrets are in the back of the house.

but I still can't wait until we can just buy cars on Amazon.
Carmax, Carvana, True Car, etc have tried that style of business, and the consumer is showing that they really don't want the non-negotiable price.
Just ask if you want to know about the dirtiness that goes on a the car lot. I don't mind spilling the beans.

Most of the guys on my sales staff have college degrees and have been making a good living off people like you for years.

Would love to hear more about how this works? Why do you have to wait until mid September, are they building to your exact specs?
Anyone here ever used Truecar.com? Is this a legit good source or bullshite?

People are so engrained with markups at dealerships that they'd rather negotiate $2k off the price of a $15k vehicle than buy one with a sticker that says $13k...

Generous?
I don't care if they lose money. You can believe they are not feeling generous towards the consumer.

Crazy GMC has a purchase online option. You just pay an instant deposit, then the rest upon delivery?
We payed $2k deposit, then both the dealer and the US concierge contacted us. Got a few 'port' options like a tow package and roof rack bars. Went to the dealer to test drive a demo last weekend. Gonna be the wife's car, I'm selling my truck.
LHD version of this exact vehicle.

No test drive? Sounds great otherwise.
I bought my current car (2016 Civic) mostly via online negotiation, but there was still a bit back-and-forth with the dealer after I drove it around. Still, it was relatively painless.

One of the guys that reports to me recently ordered his new BMW direct from the factory. saved enough off ordering from the dealer that it paid for his trip over to Germany to sign for it, drive it for a day, and then ship it to the US. He ended up paying the same but he and his wife got a trip to Europe out of it.

It's not really that special, just the color and trim/engine package we wanted. The NOLA dealer will probably get 5-6 to sell when they come out, same Seltember time frame, we just wanted what we wanted. Who knows what they will get in? They quote people $1000 or so off MSRP, but if that car has $750 option you don't want...

The car didn't exist when we bought it, outside of auto shows. We went down and test drive one last weekend.
No though, when the car comes in it's our unless we balk and refuse delivery...& eat the deposit.

I told three of these mofos today, this is what I want for my vehicle, this is what I'm willing to pay for yours. Can you make it work or not? Simple yes or no will suffice.

Walk out. It's not hard to do.
Years ago I took my daughter in to buy a new car. She was just establishing her credit history and wanted the car in her name. The salesman took her license to "check on her credit" and after several hours of playing games..we finally had it and said we were leaving. Just so happens, they "misplaced" her license and took another hour to find it! Some of these guys are professional liars IMO and will do anything to get every nickel you have in your pocket!

I don't go to the dealership until we have agreed on a price by email or (at the end of the process) phone. Show up and close.
Sitting around for hours and playing the game is not for me.

I got burned on a version of that when I was a kid shopping for my first new car. Salesman took the keys to my potential trade to let a guy evaluate it. Talk, talk, etc. I'm ready to walk, but the guy has allegedly gone to lunch so they can't get my keys.
We talk some more, and I finally raise hell about how long this guy's lunch is taking. Suddenly, salesman opens his desk drawer and hands me my keys.
That was the day I stopped believing a single word those frickers say.
