Spill. I always ask for at least 20% off the MSRP.

Profit can be slim. The difference in an invoice amount and MSRP is generally under $1500. Incentives and manufacturer cash is where a lot of money comes from.

This

I've gotten to know the owner of a local Nissan dealer in DFW through my business and he's told me all kinds of stuff over the years. Said they don't make near as much anymore with the internet because the customer has way more leverage. He said he makes his nut on factory and brand incentives.

Also it's good to be in a large city because they are all about volume and hitting those incentives. He told me he will take a loss just to move a car because he knows it's worth it to hit his volume bonus and get a nice payout.

Why do people like chickfila?

B/C they walk in and get what they want. No hassle. If I walked into a Chick-Fila and asked if I could buy a chicken sandwich for $2, the manager would say "sorry sir, the sandwich cost $3.25" Comparing the customer service of a Chick-Fila and a car dealership is actually laughable. It's never a YES or NO with a car dealership!

I don't understand how you don't understand what the guy is saying.

The price is dependent on if you're an a-hole or not. $2.00 if you're willing to show your arse and call out everyone behind the counter, $3.50 if you walk in and pay what they're asking...$3.00 if you come in with research and tell them that the market in this area dictates the sandwich should be $2.75.

Guy at work just bought one from toyota in LC. Did everything over the phone credit wise. Told them he didn't want to be there more than thirty minutes.

He wasn't.

If you have to buy a car, you're going to get bent over.

If you want to buy a car, you have all the leverage in the world.

Tell them what you want and what you're willing to pay. Let them hem and haw for about an hour, but if they want to bullshite you, just leave. Lots of people these days just negotiate by email so they can quickly move from dealer to dealer depending on who is willing to actually negotiate.

I did the same thing with Natchez Ford about 3 months ago. I found the truck I wanted and started emailing the sales guy. That went on for about 3 weeks. We eventually settled on a price. It was a Monday morning and he called me to ask what it took to earn my business. I told him and he called back 2 hours later and said it was done. He emailed me the deal and I told him I would be there shortly but had to get the kids from school at 3. I got there at 1 and was gone by 145. Very smooth transaction.

Go to three or four places. Waste their time. And, regardless of the offer, always walk out at least once. Always ask for a good bit under invoice too. Invoice price is a joke. Don't pay fees except for tax, title and license. Take off the $700 for advertising fees or whatever they're called. Look into "holdback."

I was told I was asking too much by two dealers and walked out. Found a deal better than I thought and way below what four others would do and bought. Low and behold, the 29th of the month rolled around and I got calls from two of the other dealerships telling me they needed to make quotas and were one off on the car I wanted. They exceeded what I asked by a bit, but not as good as I actually bought a few days earlier.

Y'all just don't know how to do this. You go twice, one time to look at vehicles, one time to buy what you find you like.

I bought one for my daughter recently.

I knew from looking on the net what the invoice and halfback was, what the rebates and financing options were and about what they'd offer on her trade.

I did the math and I figured a $500 deal would be acceptable.

Salesman came back with a 1300 deal on the first pass, I told him to drop it 800 and I'd buy it, anything else he came back with and I was walking.

His sales manager came back to tell me he couldn't do it, I told him I knew he could and why.

He dropped it 800 and thanked me for the business.

We were out of there in an hour and a half, 20 min of which was waiting for it to get out of cleanup.

What site do you use to look up the invoice price? I'd rather just offer the invoice price plus $300. And get on down the road...

Anyone here ever used Truecar.com? Is this a legit good source or bullshite?

Truecar is bullshite. It favors the dealers. All of those "research" site generally do, as does Blue Book, etc. Always ask less than the lowest price you see a car supposedly sold for in your area. But, do more research beyond just truecar.

No. Go way under invoice. Take out holdback, look in to rebates, take out the ad fees, etc. Do your research.
