Italy may seek "nuclear option" in dealing with migrants

there was just a long discussion about this crisis on Al Jazeera. it sounds like there are some real issues among all of the EU members. paths were discussed from Italy refusing to pay its EU contributions to countries around Italy closing their borders
also of note, these are primarily migrants from Africa, so it's not even the "Syrian" migrants that made all the headlines last year
this is a possible major inflection point with the EU, generally.
quote:
Mattia Toaldo, a senior analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, told The Times: 'If migrants continue to arrive and Italy decides to give them papers to cross borders and leave Italy it would be a nuclear option.
'Italians have lost any hope of getting help from the EU and may say, 'If you won't make it a common challenge, we will.'
quote:
Mr Giro believes that Italy can exploit European Council Directive 2001/55, developed after the Balkans conflict to give temporary European entry permits to a large number of displaced people.
If Italy does pursue this course of action, support for the Schengen scheme, which allows all EU citizens to travel freely across the Continent, may be in jeopardy.

It may also seriously escalate tensions with neighbouring France and Austria, which have used dogs and the threat of armoured vehicles to push back migrants who try to enter by that route previously.

It was only a matter of time. Good for the Italians.
If there is strife with Austria on this, I'd expect the Austrians, Hungarians, and the Poles to come to an agreement with the Italians on some diversion away from them or some form of escort through their territories to neighboring European nations. Poles have accepted any of them so I doubt they'll let them pass through even escorted, but I think they'll work with this group.

Italy is relatively poor for Western Europe and is literally dealing with like 90% of the migrants. it's insane how the EU has fricked them while they figure out how they want to deal with these migrants

Drop them off at Merkel's residence in Germany.

Well damn, there goes one virtue-signaling argument.

while most of those "migrants" were not even Syrian, that crisis has subsided i believe. it's at least stabilized
this constant wave is almost purely African and it isn't slowing down

That's exactly what I would do, but I'd make damn sure I was ready for the rebound down the road. I've said it before in a couple of other threads a while back, I think the Muslims in Germany will become the Jews of the 1930s-40s. They are, unintentionally I believe, cultivating the rebirth of their own nationalism and I think it will get out of hand, only this time with the Muslims. I feel bad for the German populous, but not their elites/ruling class.

Yep. Greece also handles a ton of these migrants and is an even worse position. Part of me wonders if this isn't Germany and Cos punishment to the Greeks and Italians for their financial crises.

Agreed that it isn't the fault of the German people but of their politicians.
As far as who the targets of German Nationalism will be, I'm thinking the main ones will be the politicians though Muslims may end up being the ones who get it at the street level.
People may harass Muslims but I think politicians will be the ones swinging from lamp posts.

i have to imagine this has to be propaganda within Italy/Greece, esp among the fascists

Could be both, but imo it will be led a nationalist politician who rides the wave. They have the perfect example in their history.

What do you mean? Scapegoated for problems for which they were not responsible? Then systematically murdered?
While the scapegoating might happen, there are some key demographic differences. Jews had been persecuted in Europe for centuries, and had been scapegoated before. The Muslims in Europe do not have that history of persecution, and the problem with outright persecution is that it is the precisely reaction Islamists want, to justify their actions post hoc. In addition, Jews made up only 0.75 percent of Germany in 1933, about 500,000 out of a population of nearly 70 million. The Islamic population of Germany is much larger, at 4.2 percent, with most Muslims being of Turkish origin. Unless they repatriate the analogies to Jewish persecution do not hold in my estimation.

I haven't been to either, but I'd bet a decent bit you're right. I do wonder how much is actual truth vs propaganda though. Much like here in the states, it's becoming harder and harder to separate truth from propoganda.

The godfather 4: the migrant crisis
Posted on 7/18/17 at 1:49 pm to crazy4lsu
That's what I meant as far as the attempt. The success of such attempt is up in the air because as you mentioned, that's exactly what the Islamists want. Where as the Jews were without support from others in their ethnic group, the Muslims are not. I don't think for a second Islamic nations will let this go on without a war. I think that's part of their purpose, to destabilize Western Europe and basically set up a guerilla network across almost an entire continent to work with the conventional armies eventually.

There is no pride left in Germany and a return of nationalism is as likely as the NK citizens rising up.
2-3 generations need to pass before that could potentially happen. By that time, there will be no more Germany.

Did that one Syrian kid that they showed in every different headline ever get rescued?
Posted on 7/18/17 at 1:53 pm to SlowFlowPro
Has Merkel tried calling the Italians racist yet?
Posted on 7/18/17 at 1:56 pm to SlowFlowPro
Italian navy should just start catching the migrant boats offshore and towing them back towards the African coast. Once word gets around that migrant boats are being turned around and towed back to Africa, it won't be as appealing for more to try to cross the Mediterranean to begin with.
