If a government agency runs a surplus, everyone who works for it should get a bonus

We complain about inefficient government and wasteful usage, let's incentivize the bureaucrats to be economical.

Whatever the surplus is, take 40% of it and disperse it as bonuses to the agency workers that made it happen.

Or they could give it back to the people who supply it with money

My suggestion was to let each agency keep 10% of the savings for bonuses. kick the rest up the line until you get to the department level, each layer gets to keep a slice, then drop the final savings onto the debt.

There would be no more buying 300 flat screen TVs at the end of the fiscal year to post the menu for the chow hall.

So, I am clear, you are saying we should reward them, more than their already nice benefits, for doing their job correctly and in a non-wasteful way?

When a private company finds ways to cut costs while continuing to maintain same level of service, it is rewarded by larger profit margins

I think you're correct. We should give incentives to function efficiently, but we wont. We really need a reset button as a country and re-build the federal government.

Im necessarily supporting the OP but what he's saying is. "Do the same shite many private sector companies do to encourage better performance........ incentives"

Except the private sector cares about profits. The government is not there to make profits. Its to enforce the law, protect the citizenry and stay the frick out of our way.

They dont need a bonus for doing their job.

In the private sector, you get a bonus for making your company more profitable. The government takes our money to operate.

Terrible analogy.

You have no idea how government agencies are funded. There is no such thing as a true surplus and giving gov't workers such an incentive means they'll cut corners and only fund their pet projects to get that bonus. Stupid idea really.

There's the key difference. In the private sector, revenue is somewhat connected to providing the same service levels and product. It's not in government. It's why you shouldn't incentivize government profit performance.

The government isn't supposed to make a profit. If it's making a profit then we are paying to much in taxes.

So what happens when they inflate their budgets to get bigger bonuses?

You are wanting to give Richard Scrushy and Bernie Madoff access to the checking account?

In my view, government surplus means over-taxation that should be paid back.

But that is why governments intentionally never have surpluses.
