Old friend of mine did med school in 318. A part of him died up there and never came home.

It happens. Anyone who moves up there and lives there for a significant amount of time then moves back. They become a shell of themself.

If wife would go I'd sell it all and head out! I'm tired of Ascension, absolutely hate BR. But she ain't leaving family & friends so here I'll be! Hoping to buy a 2nd home/vacation home soon and at least live the dream part time!

I had the misfortune of spending a weekend there for a trade show once.

I escaped physically unharmed, but I've developed a slight twitch that occurs any time I see a Margaritaville or hear "5 o'clock somewhere".

Grew up on the north shore as well, went to school out of state. Lived in Tampa for 2 years. Job moved me back here to BR. I was pumped to come home then, I still like being home but being back reassured that Tampa was an awesome place to live (as long as you live in south Tampa) and we'll probably move back when the little one gets older.

Also I consider myself lucky that I went to school out of state, idk about you but the mandeville people I know have had the same friends since elementary school- I got to expand my horizons.

Yeah. You need to get out of NYC.

An update from my OP.

Am a finalist for a gig in Nashville. Flying up for face to face interviews next week.

Another larger bank reached out to me locally to chat.

Have to admit, I'm a bit torn. Have really tossed and turned over this decision. Still thinking it through.

While I'm still weighing it out, one thing that makes me cringe about Nashville is the prices of real estate. Might have missed the boat on bang for the buck by a couple years.

Spent whole life in BR with deep LA family roots. Moved to Houston for job. The hardest parts were: --missing: family --LA food--BR water. Seriously. Nothing beats BR water.

Upside: cheaper housing, good public schools (in my area), proactive road construction, no income tax, more variety of people (not so much "us" vs "them") and a can-do attitude as opposed to a "let somebody else do it" attitude.

Even with all those plusses, it still took a year to adjust, away from home.

Do you regret it? Would you do it again?

No, I don't regret leaving BR. As some others have said, it's good to get out and expand one's perspectives.
But I do miss some things.

Aside from the 3 f's (family, football, food) what do you miss about BR?

Moved after graduation to California for 1st post graduate school in 1996 and have yet to return. Lately I've been thinking about returning to Louisiana, however I wouldn't move back to the city of BR.

We've been considering it but I have 2 kids about to start the 5th grade. I just always come back to not wanting to uproot them at this age. My parents are also both here and getting old. The wife and I have kind of agreed that we will try to wait until the kids are done with school unless our employment/job situation or the crime changes dramatically.

As somebody who raised kids in BR, get out now. This private school shite is BS. There are great places in this nation without all the crap BR puts up with. Go soon and make a better life for your family.

Anybody else seriously considered moving out of the BR area or Louisiana?

Moved away. Came back.

If I move away again, it won't be to another city. It will be to a more rural area.

Same.

I prefer mid sized cities. I wouldn't want to live in a place like Houston. Maybe Chattanooga or Fayetteville or something like that.

I know someone that did the same thing, but instead of being a rural area, they left the country entirely and went to New Zealand

Landmass has good public schools (Pass Christian and Long Beach) and a low cost of living.
