We recently got a dog from local humane society and wanted to know everyone's opinion on the best/most affordable flea and heartworm treatment.

There are so many options out there now I am am not sure which way to go. Not sure if some of the combo pills(trifexis or sentinel) are the best all around or better to treat with separate meds for each condition like Bravecto which vet recommended.

Heartgard is great but hard to find these days. It's chewable and is supposed to be beef flavor so they think it's a treat.

Heartgard for sure. You can probably order it online. It's the easiest medicine to give to dogs since they think it's a treat like Bestbank said.

Definitely Bravecto for fleas. It's kinda expensive ($60/12 weeks for my Lab) but worth it.

We use Pro Heart 6 month shot for heart worms and Comfortis oral for fleas once a month and have never had any problems. I've been doing this for multiple dogs for more than 5 years.

I would recommend Proheat 6, the 6 month shot for heartworms and Bravecto, the 3 month pill for fleas. Not the cheapest route but much less chance for missed doses. Drug Co. research shows that of people that claim to give monthly doses always on time have a purchase history of only 9 a year. You don't want to mess with heartworms.

Dont' remember what it's called, but we get the brand they sell at Sams Club. Cheaper than heartgard.

Dog flea and heartworm meds

Bravecto for fleas and ticks. Only have to give 1x every 90 days. If you go this route, you must give a separate heartworm medicine, such as HeartGard (about $22 for 6 month supply).

Trifexis for fleas, heartworms and internal parasites (all-in-one pill) given monthly.

Your local vet will charge about $90 for a two pack (large dog dosage) and for Trifexis about $120 - $130 for a 6 month supply.

Online, you can find Bravecto for $60 and Trifexis for $85 ... but you must get them from Australia. Shipping takes about two weeks to get in, so plan accordingly. The web site is called Pet-i-Supply dot com. I've used them for years and their legitimate as they come.

Vet here.
Heartgard is crap now-a-days. There has been much resistance to ivermectin (which is the ingredient in Heartgard), especially in the South where mosquitoes are prevalent and the ingredient Ivermectin has been around forever.
There are much safer products these days .

Trifexis is the best for heartworms, intestinal worms, and flea control combined. Plus it is much cheaper than doing the Proheart 6 injection combined with a separate flea/tick preventative.

If you are not concerned about fleas, the Proheart 6 injection is the way to go. Covers heartworms and intestinal worms.

If the dog has fleas/ticks already, then Bravecto is a new medication on the market. Fewer doses, longer duration.

Heartgard for HW treatment.

Nexgard for flea and tick prevention.
