Affirmative action was on full display last night behind the plate. No other way around it describing what I saw.

I was not a fan of the umps. The calls really werent what bothered me, my issues were more about the idea that no one turned the tv to ESPN yesterday at 7 to see the umpires. Stop parading around like people are there to see you.

Not even sour grapes, but the umps top to bottom were atrocious, including some calls Lsu got.

Honestly, I know this isn't the consensus opinion, but I didn't find that much to gripe about with the umps.
Oh, sure. I know people will bring up the miss strike/balls calls and others.
But honestly, I've never watched a baseball game in my life where some strikes and balls weren't questionable.
It's a LOT easier to call them using a TV camera and slow-mo.

That is simply too big of a moment to make that ticky tack call to cost lsu a championship
I'm sure you'd be saying the same thing had it happened to florida
That was some seriously retarded shite by slaughter. I mean if there's 1 out, sure, maybe try and give your team a chance to score by preventing the double play. But with 0 outs you have to know better

I loved when the UF player stuck his bat out to bunt and didn't pull it back. the ump called it a ball

My opinion is simple and unbiased.
If this is the best the NCAA can do for umpires (typically "the best of the best" call the NCAA tournaments etc) then the NCAA needs help.
I've never seen a more ambiguous strike zone and lack of rules knowledge at the college level considering all games, not just the LSU ones. It's truly disappointing.

Strike Zones is what baffled me the whole time. Even when it benefited LSU.

College baseball umpiring is and has been terrible forever. It's almost a known variable to deal with. It goes both ways, generally.
The variable strike zones pitch to pitch are difficult on hitters and pitchers.

Overall, they were not good. They were bad for both teams, no matter which game. Plate umps were quite inconsistent. Call at 2nd was ticky-tack. Didn't affect the DP being turned. Pro umps would have let that go. We would have lost regardless, based on our lack of hitting in clutch situations.

Yes. I understand split-second calls, human error. What I'm talking about though is umps with an agenda, like the "stay here, stay here!" guy. He obviously believes that batters leaning into pitches is a problem and he's taken it upon himself to make (to the point of ridiculous excess) it a point in his calls.
1st game, he told Slaughter to "stay here, stay here!" when it was obvious Slaughter could have literally done nothing to get out of the way of the pitch. However, last night, different ump, had no problem with the Florida batter leaning into a pitch.

Thoughts on the quality of the umpiring
The worst I've ever seen at a CWS. Baseball more than any other sport is affected by the officials. That's ok, it is part of the game. But to miss so many calls and to have such an exaggerated strike zone is overboard.

Was always taught:
Never put yourself in a position where an official (ref, ump, etc) can determine an outcome,
The best officials are invisible during a contest
Probably too lofty of teachings....:-)

Compared to LSU's playing, they were great.

I thought for sure after game 1 vs. OSU the guy behind the plate tonight wouldn't be back there again. Agree it didn't affect the outcome but some of the calls this guy makes make no sense at all.
He wasn't. The guy from the OSU game was Greg Street, he was the third base ump last night. Way to be racist... black umpire, must be the same one.
Last night's ump behind the plate was Troy Fullwood.

two different umpires. their styles were too different which is typical for officiating.

Strike zone argument I will give you, but what rule interpretation did any of them make that led you to say their 'rules knowledge' was lacking? I'm seriously asking. I didn't see any rules enforced improperly.

The first base umpire was so dead on it was ridiculous. That guy was dead on.

NCAA Rule 8.2.d
A batter may not make a movement to intentionally get hit by the pitch and must avoid being hit whenever possible. If the batter's action is deemed intentional then if the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, the ball is
dead, it shall be called a strike and the batter is not awarded first base. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, the ball is dead, it shall be called a ball and the batter is not awarded first base.
Sorry but this is not his agenda, it is the NCAA rules committee which is presided over by representatives of the schools. As for why the other guy didn't call it, I cant answer. I guess the second guy was wrong. Ultimately it is a judgment call. In my opinion, both of them were wrong in their judgment, but not in the enforcement of the rule.

I honestly cant believe a person who watched that replay would ever conclude it was a bad call. He wasn't sliding in the basepath, obviously went out of his way to hit the guy, and as you said, seemed to have no interest in the base itself.
Yup...as soon as I saw the replay...I conceded the call! It was obvious. Now...I think the rule that the guy who scored has to go back is stupid...but it is the rule...We ALL have to play by them. P.S. Went to school with Michael Slaughter (jake's dad...and jake's grandfather was my dad's QB at LaTech)...sorry dude!
