The city of St. Anthony, Minn., will avoid a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Philando Castile’s family in the wake of his 2016 shooting death by paying out nearly $3 million to his family.

According to the Associated Press, Castile’s mother is set to receive the $2.995 million as settlement in Castile’s death at the hands of a St. Anthony police officer, Valerie Castile’s attorneys and the city of St. Anthony announced Monday.

quote:

Robert Bennett, one of Valerie Castile’s attorneys, said the settlement was reached in order to move expeditiously rather than to have the case drawn out (once again) in federal court in a process that would “exacerbate and reopen terrible wounds.”

Expected this. Even though money should be taken out for the violence she promoted.

Every penny, along with whatever equities are bought with it, will all be gone in 5 years.

So?

He's dead. People who believe money is "justice" for a "loved ones" death are sick.

This city has 9,000 people. How the hell does it afford $3 million?

Whew lawds gone be some bans in this one.

I'm not convinced this one wasn't murder...3 mil is a small price to pay for a capital crime at the hands of an employee.

Why are cops so trigger happy!?

Sad thing is they'd happily keep that money instead of Philando still being alive.

Completely ridiculous settlement amount. Insurance companies need to start suing govt entities.

Jesus Christ, the responses in this thread are the least subtle subtle-racism I've seen on the OT. Expected on the PoliBoard, but damn...

A man loses his life over a busted or burnt out tail light, a little girl and her mother will always carry around with them the memory of a man being killed in front of them and 2.9 mil is all the family got for all the trauma? Should've been more!

Does anybody else think that on some level these folks have a thought of martyrdom and $ for their family in the back of their minds when they make their decisions on how to deal with the police?
I had a minority patient last year tell me he disobeyed the police on purpose when he got pulled over (he was aggressive and jumped out of car - wound up just getting tazed/arrested) because he wanted a payout for his family or himself if he survived.

In other news, the city of St. Anthony, Minnesota just saw a huge boost in the local economy.

That money will be gone in about a month
