glad your wife wasn't hurt, but really.
1. Its your car, does it matter who has an opinion on it? If your wife/yourself think it looks okay and like the car than what's the problem? your BIL doesn't have to drive it.
2. People are quick to say this car is ugly and that car is not, but its all a matter of opinion. Opinions shouldn't matter if the car ultimately gets you to point a to b and back to a.
3. if you're paying for it, and bro in law aint, than it aint his money to worry about it and he can kindly STFU.
Its like people who love coupes, some people don't.
some people love mini vans, some people don't.
some people love suvs, some people don't.
some people love hatchbacks, some people don't
do you like the car? don't let someone else's opinion change that. if it was a mechanical issue than thats one thing, aesthetics is up to you.

I like that type of crossover styling TBH. While I like Outbacks more overall, that isn't an ugly car at all.
It does come pretty close to minivan, but not enough that I wouldn't buy it.
It's a chick vehicle, of course, but if it's in your budget and fits your needs, who cares

Can't go wrong with a Toyota. Reliable and will last forever

Tell your BIL to eat a bag of dicks.
Just because he's driving 99' hatchback Civic with ricer pipes and a stick on hood scoop doesn't mean he can shite on your adult vehicle

I hate the look of the Venza as well.
But... to each their own.

1. You really care what your BIL thinks?
2. You really give an eff what a car looks like? That really matters? Who the hell you trying to impress?

Please tell me that is his minivan in the background of that last pic?
Actually, yes. Better yet, both of their cars are minivans, and I've never said a word about them driving 2 soccer mombiles.

And who cares what your BIL thinks. If it fits your budget and lifestyle then go for it. I stoped worrying about what other people think a long time ago.
I don't really care, we just both wanted to get other opinions because we were curious if others would like or hate the way this particular one looked. Plus, if more of you guys like it than don't, I'm hoping he will shut up about it.

So you never take the exterior styling into consideration when purchasing a car?
I'm not trying to impress anyone, but I do prefer having a decent looking vehicle.

Not really. I drive a Toyota Camry: good mileage, runs forever, minimal maintenance, good price. Don't give an eff about the look.
You and wife like the car? That's all that matters. Eff your BIL

I am highly disappointed in the OT, we're on the second page of the thread and no one has asked for pics of the man's wife.
It's almost like people here are maturing.

It looks like it can't decide if it wants to be a station wagon or a van. But overall looks fine. Toyota reliability, I'm assuming great MPG, and looks fine. Go for it. We've had a Sienna for several years now and it drives great. I never thought we would end up with a van, but my wife wanted the power sliding doors for carpool. The very next year she decided she wanted to stay at home so carpool wasn't an issue, but she still loved the van. It is awesome for family trips. Sometimes I hate not taking the Jeep down to the beach, but there's no way we can pack for the family in it.

I really wish people would care less about what other people think. If you think it's a safe, reliable, quiet and affordable vehicle, why the hell would you care what he has to say unless he's paying for it?

It's only ok. Has the same V6 they put in the Tacoma and Sienna. Rated at 26 mpg on the interstate and has 268 HP.
My wife's commute is around 60 miles on the interstate. She drove it to work this morning for the first time and averaged 24.9 mpg at 75 mph.

The Outback is a great vehicle.
The Venza was not as competitive from a sales standpoint as a typical mainstream Toyota. It was (an is) a good car but I think their pricing and packing strategy was flawed. They also didn't equip very many with all wheel drive - pushing those buyers to either the RAV4 or Highlander. As a consequence, Ford's larger Edge and Chevy's Equinox outsold it significantly especially in the snow belt states. I believe that is why it was discontinued. There was not enough space between the Highlander and RAV4 to appropriately market the Venza in that very competitive segment.
I think the Venza is a fine used buy. It's essentially a Camry wagon, which makes it very practical. I would also strongly consider a 2014 or 2013 Outback Premium or Limited. A V6 Powered Equinox or Edge may be a good option if you can't find an Outback or Venza to your liking.
As for any used vehicle....make sure it never spent much time North or I-40. If so, check for rust and corrosion.

I don't know about the car, but I do know I would tell my BIL to have a coke and a smile and STFU

Ah! I would say your vehicle choice is far above average.
Sound's like BIL may be bitter that you scored his sister?

I like the venza, personally. And you can't find a more reliable engine. I'd get it.
Oh, and datass.
