I remember me and my wife thinking all sorts of things about how we'd raise our kids. Only feed them organic food. No TV watching for hours. If their clothes got dirty, immediately change them into new ones.

We've had to eat a lot of those things since becoming parents. My motto is "the only perfect parents are one's without kids."

What's say the OT?

I didn't have delusional goals like this before becoming a father, so I haven't had to ....

We laugh at that stuff now, but in our minds it was the only way we'd raise our kids

Everyone is parenting expert until they have a kid.

Personally, I think the only perfect parents are the ones without kids

Before: The kids are eating what we eat for dinner, and if they don't like it they can go to bed hungry.

After: Oh my gawd, they're gonna starve! Quick, microwave another bowl of Mac N Cheese before they die!

More stress on the weekends with kids.

Work is easier.

Would never give them away.

My house:

Before: The kids are eating what we eat for dinner, and if they don't like it they can go to bed hungry.

After: The kids are eating what we eat for dinner, and if they don't like it they can go to bed hungry. Maybe a cup of yogurt just to be sure they don't wake my arse up in the middle of the night crying hungry.

I always said my kids would never have a DVD player in the car.

That lasted until the oldest was big enough to sit facing forward.

That was my plan. Then my kids turned out to be so skinny that I'm afraid CPS will take them away any day now.

Young kids make Monday's much more enjoyable than they used to be.

Hey, as long as they are not bleeding profusely or dead, all is well.

I would have handled discipline a little differently. Then again, my daughter was one very challenging teenager. Almost ran both her mother and me crazy. Was definitely a factor in the mother leaving and wanting a divorce. Some of that I had control over, some of it I now realize that I really didn't as the mother essentially sabotaged much of my parenting in order for her to avoid conflict with our daughter. Ex-wife never understood that conflict is a part of adolescence.

One the other hand, my son was a walk in the park.

when all is said and done, you throw out all of the naïve idealisms, love them, and do the best you can with what you know and have to work with at the time. Kids definitely do not come with instruction books and they're not robots.
