Any of y'all know a polygamist?

Just watched a show on polygamy; it showed it in a very negative light. I've also seen interviews with some that explain it as a normal family that is just larger than most (I think the HBO show made it in a favorable manner (Big Love or something of the like)). But I've never actually known someone who is an actual polygamist... does anyone of the OT have any real experience with them?

I know a lot of baby daddies. Pretty much the same thing right?

I also know a chick that is "married" to two straight dudes... spends half the week in one bedroom... half the week in the other.

I think it's weird. But if it's between consenting adults, not some cultish arranged teenage marriage, who am I to tell them it's wrong or shouldn't be allowed.
If it doesn't hurt anyone, then the only reason I see it being illegal is for religious reasons. Which is supposed to not be allowed.

I've seen where their beliefs require them to adequately prepare for their family, to produce enough money to take care of them... but it seems that in reality it ends up being just a another welfare family (or two or three).

My dad worked in Utah for a good while... the welfare thing was definitely the case with the one that still practiced it there.

Both sets of great grandparents on my mother's side were polygamist. My family has been Mormon since the early days of the church . I knew both great grandmothers but they were ancient when I was a kid so I don't have any interesting stories. We did have our family reunion at an old polygamist colony in the 90's. That was interesting.

The Constitution says keep the state out of the church. It never says the opposite.

Never viewed Big Love as making polygamy favorable, thought it showed a lot of the negatives.

I live in Utah now.
The scary part of polygamy is that these are just old, gross men who brainwash women and children.
They marry little girls.
It is sick.
I know no 'modern' polygamysts from maybe San Francisco or New York whom just openly want multiple partners.

Worked with a guy from Egypt that had three wives. He had them set up in a multi-level home and each set of woman/kids had their own floor. He spent part of each week on each floor. He told me they only went out as a group two or three times a year and that setting it up was a major PITA. The rest of the time the women acted as if the others didn't exist. He said the multiple family thing isn't as prevalent in the Middle East as people in the west think for financial reasons. He was a fairly high ranking government official and could afford it but I can see how most wouldn't be able to do so.

Dealing with one woman is a PIA. I've never understand why they want more than one wife, seems like nothing but headaches to me.

My wife used to watch the reality show about it and I don't see why anyone would do that to themselves. The main benefit seems to be having lots of kids. Forget all the jokes about managing that many women, can you imagine supporting 3-4 families that need to live in separate houses?
