Do you think social media has changed people (especially the youth)?

I've been thinking a lot about this topic the last few years. I'm a recent LSU grad (fairly young), and I have noticed growing up in the last 5 years or so that people began to become obsessed with looking at their phones and checking social media (esp. Facebook, Instagram, etc). Some of the younger people I met in college act more like pre-teens than adults (not sure if this was the case in past generations too), and many of their communication skills and eye contact are not good. I truly think it's an addiction for some people. Even despite strict classroom policies on putting phones away, I'd say almost half of the class was still sneaking ways to get on their phones.
I also think, in general, something is just "different" about this next generation of kids. I think they put way too much into their social media instead of other senses of self. The stuff these kids are exposed to all over the place on social media is one of the reasons I think kids today are a different breed of animal. There seems to be a more disrespect of authority everywhere (to parents, teachers, and police). Before someone asks, yes, I feel like a misfit compared to a lot of people my own age because of this. I guess I'm too old school. I would never want to be a teacher and have to deal with these kids today.

I heard a report about six months ago that the average attention span of young people when clicking a sight on their phones is 15 seconds. i.e., they only basically read headlines without reading the contents. So, I can definitely see why some are so easily mislead by what they read.

We used to Facebook for hours when I was in school. There is nothing overly different here.

Well I asked this also because I was curious to know if older people thought the same about the following generation, or if this is an even more drastic change today. I feel like so many young people are so shallow that I'll never find a true class act like my grandparents are in this world. I also feel like I don't even speak the same language as kids at all

I'm so glad that social media wasn't around when I was younger. I did so much stupid shite back then and there's no official record of any of it.

That and video gaming. The teenage son of a good friend shows signs of literally being addicted to it. It's all he thinks about, his schoolwork suffers, and he's abandoned other interests he used to enjoy.

Social Media has become the downfall of our society.

Without a doubt it's changing society as a whole.

I had a friend like that with World of Warcraft. Dude wouldn't go out or anything on the weekends. Just stay home and play that game.

What happened? Did he get over it? My friends are hoping this is a phase.

It's definitely leaving its mark on society that's for sure. People have been narcissistic since the beginning of time. Social media just gives all of them a place congregate and try to outdo each other.

Social media has changed society in general, but yeah for youth, social media to them is like going to a party. In HS, for example, everyone goes to a party and its all about who can drink the most or who has the best outfit on, etc, but now that mentality is 24/7 and for some reason, people do what they see others do and well.. Its just a huge cluster frick.

Laziness comes to mind 1st and foremost.... all the kids today just want to sit inside on their phones or computers or video games.... I saw a story the other night about how kids don't have anything to do in Denham... well they won't go anyway.... sooo many people texting and driving is scary.... I worry about getting hit from behind everyday on the way home because it seems everyone is texting and driving....
