Went to Brq yesterday (review)

Atmosphere: I found it to be very appealing and casual.
Service: Everyone was very pleasant and wanted to make sure you were enjoying your experience.
Food: Homemade chips and pickles are free, they were both good, the pickles were a little on the sweet side but good.
I ordered the Smokehouse ( 3 meats and 1 side)
Pulled pork: Very moist and went very well with the Carolina style sauce. I did not get a lot of smoke flavor on the meat though.
Sliced Brisket: Very good flavor and really good smoke ring. The slices were cut a little thick and were not able to be pulled apart with ease. I did feel it was slightly underdone.
Chopped Brisket: Moist and very flavorful! I would say that the chopped came from a different brisket than were my slices came from.
Pit Beans: Very good flavor. That they are on the sweet side would be the only small complaint.
Sauces: I tried them all I prefer the North Carolina Vinegar the best. The Louisiana spicy is not spicy at all.
Overall I did enjoy my meal 7/10 and will be back to check out the chicken and the ribs. I also want to try some of the non bbq items on the menu. I hope it has staying power as It seems like it might be a good brunch option on Sunday's

I went yesterday as well.
Agreed
agreed
Agreed, except I didn't think the pickles were too sweet, I usually don't like sweet pickles but these were pleasant.
Agreed, it was the favorite of all the BBQ'd meats.
Disagree, mine seemed like it had been cut way ahead and wasn't as moist as I'd like. It did have decent flavor though.
The carolina mustard sauce was my favorite along with the rest of my table. Louisiana sauce was not spicy at all. The memphis sauce seemed off, something that i can't put my finger on didn't work in that sauce. The vinegar was ok.
I also had the ribs, which had decent flavor, the meat literally fell off the bone, to me slightly over cooked. I prefer a slight pull.
I had the coleslaw which was pretty good, I usually don't like a mayo based coleslaw but this was good, it went very well with the pulled pork. The cornbread that came with the plate was ok.
I think a little over priced for BBQ, my lunch was $18 plus tip it was over $20. I think Voo Doo is better value for a lunch and the food is probably a little better.
I will go again to try other items on the menu.

I cannot get behind paying this much for BBQ. Maybe I don't go to fancy enough BBQ restaurants, but then again I don't see BBQ as being fancy.
Hell, a two meat two side plate at Franklin BBQ is like $13 dollars.
Maybe I am just out of touch with reality these days.

I went for lunch on Tuesday.
My SO had the Pastrami, really unique. Very good. Bread was excellent.
I got the Jambo lunch platter. Brisket was excellent. They forgot the sauce and I honestly didn't notice until I saw the table next to me get the three ramekans. Pulled pork was pretty bland, nothing special on this.
Agree the pork rinds & pickles were a nice touch.
Service will get better, we were there for the first meal, but our server was obviously overwhelmed. I won't speak to some of the disappointments here as I was expecting them.
On to cocktails..
Both cocktails I had were great, very refreshing. GF had the Frose' and it was very, very good. Loved it.
They need to MASSIVELY improve their beer selection. Totally piss poor and no excuse.

Agreed all the way. The wife and I are going to have a free day next week to go out for lunch and we both wanted to check this place out until we saw it was likely going to be $40-50 for us both to eat and drink. That's too damn high for a casual BBQ lunch.
ETA: Still want to check it out at eventually regardless.

What did they have bottled and on tap?
Posted on 6/8/17 at 3:49 pm to TigerRob20
I didn't see any taps.
They had some Abita crap and Canebrake. That was it for LA beers.
Typical imports: Corona, Heineken, etc.

I read that they only have Coke in a small bottle at $2.50 a pop. Is this true? No soda refills?
Posted on 6/8/17 at 4:26 pm to Langland
yes, served coke from small bottles no refills...
had brisket and pulled pork combo, both were decent sauces were meh..

I hope they are reading this thread. Fix this.
Even Voo Doo has stepped up their beer game. It's so easy and will pay dividends.
Posted on 6/8/17 at 5:07 pm to Cash
While I agree they need to improve their beer selection, they do have Envie and voodoo.
I checked it out a couple of days ago on their opening and I was fairly impressed. I agree that it might be slightly overpriced, but it is definitely leagues better than VooDoo BBQ. to suggest otherwise is asinine.
If you're thinking about going, I suggest going at dinner. Their lunch specials don't look to be too bad though, about 10 to $12 per entree on the lunch menu.

Just did. Didn't eat too much, split it all with the wife trying not to go too wild.
The space is beautiful and inviting.
They serve homemade chips and pickles for you when you sit down. The chips are kinda meh, but the pickles were awesome. Slightly sweet, fresh, just the right amount of sour and dill. We plowed through two bowls![]()
Started with fried green tomatoes. They are heavily breaded and I think had panko mixed in.. but not overwhelmingly so and the breading is very crunchy and well seasoned. The habanero dill ranch is amazing, although I did not find it spicy at all, I could bathe in it.
Had the slider trio and got all of the BBQ sauces to try. The sliders were void of any sauce or vegetables, but perfect for dipping into sauces. The pretzel buns were great.
The standard sweet sauce was very thin and not my cup of tea. Don't really like sweet BBQ sauce. The Carolina mustard sauce was hands down the best. Tangy mustard with a bit of sweetness. I think I tasted worcestershire and molasses, but maybe brown sugar. Anyway, I could douse an old leather shoe in it and it's still be amazing. The vinegar sauce was okay.. too vinegary for me, overpowered the flavor of the food. The hot BBQ sauce was very very sweet but had the thickness that was absent from the original sweet sauce and had a nice spicy kick from red pepper flakes.
We also had the smoked wings, in what was supposed to be the spicy Cajun sauce... But I'm not sure it was the right sauce. Was not spicy at all and sweet like regular BBQ sauce. The wings were very smokey and tender, very good. I would change the sauce next time. Also, 10 bucks for 5 drumettes is a little steep.
All in all, the food we had was very good and we will definitely be back.. next time I'd like to try the actual BBQ plate(s) to get some real BBQ. It might be a smidge overpriced but not enough so to deter me from going... Especially since it's very close to my house.

We went today for lunch and pretty much agree with what has been said. Got the pull pork and chicken (Q platter I believe). Meats were good, but it was pretty much just BBQ. Nothing extremely special.
Atmosphere was great and a really nice building, but I like to get down and dirty when eating BBQ. Give me a paper plate and big napkin over the fancy stuff
Our big gripe was the water. They give you just a little cup and pitcher of water for the table. No ice. Food took about 30 minutes to come out then another 15 to get the bill and pay. 1.5 hour lunch that cost $16 for chicken, pull pork and beans. I'd go back for the daily specials once the service gets right and we can eat and be back to the office in an hour

Too expensive for BBQ and it sounds like he's trying to be too cute with some other things. Yes, I'd give him a break on the slow service being that he just opened.

1) The place has been formally open less than a week. If you go when the place hasn't had a chance to find it's sea legs, it is unreasonable to criticize for service snafus.
2) It if a very nice physical space. Obviously, they invested heavily in infrastructure. To expect that the cost will be the same as that of places whose physical plants are rat holes is silly.

Full disclosure- I have not been and have no idea what their beer selection is. I was just responding to the other posters comment.
That said if they have Envie and Voodoo that is a good start. I was expecting BMC, Corona, and Canebrake basted on previous posts.

Holy hell. You either work for VooDoo, know someone that works for VooDoo, have family that works for VooDoo or your taste buds are completely shot.
VooDoo is one of the worst BBQ places around. TJ's is significantly better and it's not even BBQ (and not a knock against TJ's either).

Kind of like Cane's right, when everyone bitches about their high prices but yet they're always busy? If BRQ can stay busy selling bbq, then good for them.

I suspect its a temporary ice machine issue...had no issues with our service it was spot on.
overall I think the place will succeed by default due to the garbage BBQ options in this town elsewhere.
