Saw this on Bogleheads and started thinking about it.

I've noticed three main types of restaurants where you order at the counter. In all, you pay in advance and you are prompted to enter a tip amount:

1. You pick up your food at the counter, then you clean up after yourself and put your dishes by the trash can, like at Moe's
2. They bring the food to you, then you clean up after yourself as in Panera.
3. They bring the food out to you and you leave your dishes at the table/they clean up for you, as in McAlisters

I don't tend to tip for #1, but am less sure about #2&3. What say the OT?

Protip:
You're a fricking retard for eating at that cardboard box tastin, small portion giving piece of shite.

On topic. Leave $1 per person at #3. Don't tip the others.
ETA I'm a liar. I always Tip $1 on fricking anything with a tip line. I'm a dumb frick. But I won't eat Mcfrickersters

As a general rule, if the tip is requested upfront before services are rendered, i.e. I order and pay at the counter first, I don't tip.

I'm not a huge fan of McAlisters either, but it was the first thing that I could think of that did things like that.

1 I don't tip. They did not provide any service. It's just like ordering from a fast food place.

2. Do they provide any other service? Do they bring me a refill when I run out of drink? If so I tip accordingly if not I don't tip.

3 same as 2

Just pay with cash at those places and you don't have to deal with that

I'm going to piggyback with my own questions.

DO you tip pre or post tax?

Say a bill is $120, then add $12 for tax and another buck or two for that add on Orleans tax.
Do you tip $24 or $26.40 ??

Not that it matters much but just a question I always had.

Also. I'm out eating, I order $100 worth of food, and four cocktails. If the cocktails are $10 each, I pay $8 tip on the four drinks. If I order a bottle of $60 wine, I am to pay $12 tip, for a lot less work than making those four cocktails?

Why do we pay per drink at the bar, but percent at the table for liquor? Had some wine the other day and was thinking about it. Shocked me how a dinner at Shaya could top a dinner at Commander's or August ..

1) No tip, that is just fast food. Maybe a dollar if paying cash. If they have a POS that only allows percentage tips I never bother, even if (2 or 3)

2) $1 This is how Company Burger is set up. I always tip a buck there.

$3) I leave a buck per person on the table.

One that gets me is 2 Amigos. They ask you when you pay, what you plan to tip. It's a buffet mind you, but they bring you seconds and such. You get your own drinks. I always feel like I over tip there because I'm put on the spot.

I just realized there's no rhyme or reason to it for me.

I don't tip at Izzos, but I do tip at Zippys. I don't tip at Zoe's, but I do tip at La Madeleine.

A. Tip some to bring the food.
B. Tip some for the cleanup.
C. A+B if they do both.

Side tangent for servers here as I just did this.

I put a quarter down when paying cash so she could round up and keep another buck instead of not. Not leaving the quarter would have left her $0.96 in change with her tip.

Worse to put change of any kind on the table or worse to leave dollar bills that leave server with a bunch of change if they are keeping a register that accurate?

FTR it came out to a 25-30% tip.

I'll sometimes tip at Brewbacher's because the counter girl will remember my name and what I drink, and will warn me if I order incorrectly (telling me that I don't want a "Large", because that's really a family sized order).

I'll sometimes tip at Voodoo if they're unusually helpful. If they come by to check on me a couple of times, ask to clear some trash from my table.

Other than that, I usually do not tip at pick-up window joints.

Neither matter, but what you did is usually very appreciated. I assure you I never took coinage as an insult unless we're talking a 25-cent tip total.

Of course, I worked in a local place where they had no issue with us dumping all of our change into the register and swapping it out with bills. I've heard some chain restaurants force their servers to keep the coinage and then they have to haul it off to Coinstar or some shite once a month.
