There are so many sad and devastating things in the world

but I don't know if, illness wise, it gets much worse than Alzheimer's disease. To see someone still alive, but lose everything that makes them who they are. Seeing someone you love wither away, even though they are still there physically. To know, that there is literally no way to halt its progression like is possible with other illnesses.
I'm not taking away from the other illnesses and how horrible they are. Alzheimer's just has unique things that make it hard to bear in its own way.
Sorry for the depressing post, sometimes you just gotta talk.

It's very hard on a loved one. I pray for a quick and merciful end, but it just goes on and on. My best wishes to you.

I agree. I truly wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

There's a guy with Alzheimer's who comes into my restaurant every single day around noon, gets a cup of water and walks around the whole place, then leaves. The nicest guy.

My Aunt has Alzheimer's. It is a terrible disease.

Sorry for your struggle. It's real. As with every illness or disease, it has its own unique circumstances to overcome. I hope it's not your mother given the timing of the post, and if it is I'm very sorry to hear that.

I'm with you. My mother is 68 and in a nursing home. Her dementia kicked in at 60 and it got really bad about 3-4 years ago.
She is currently in a place in Alabama where the cost is more affordable so I'm not able to see her much, which is somewhat of a relief and utterly awful all at once.
I'm hoping for a peaceful end. She would be mortified that she turned out this way.
Stay strong.

Saw my mom this morning and its heartbreaking. She doesn't have Alzheimer's, just run of the mill age related dementia but her mind is gone. She's rarely clear on who I am. Sure wish I had found more time to spend with her when she was sharp and funny and full of unlikely stories about the family history in Ireland.

Damn sorry to hear that. Has to be very difficult. Prayers.

Same with my grandmother who I'm closer to than my actual mother. It's really, really rough.

Toss up for me between that and Lou Gehrig.

ALS aka Lou Gehrig's disease. It's horrible.

My dad had a stroke three years ago and Alzheimer's hit almost instantly thereafter. It's killing us watching the strong, righteous man that raised us wither away like he is.

it runs in my family
my grandmother held on almost 15 years is full stage dementia
not only had she forgotten who she was, it went on so long I damn near forgot what she was like before
I know it's coming for my dad who's 72 and still works every day
and I know it's coming for me
I've declared specific instructions in my will that when it does happen to me I am to be relived of my post

I don't know ALS is pretty bad as well.. They lose their entire self, but their brain is totally aware of everything wrong with themselves... With Alzheimer's, at least they get to a point where they're not aware anymore...
But they're both terrible..
But they're both terrible..

While I am so happy to be spending this special day with my family, I can't help but think of a friend who's 7 year old only child, who was recently diagnosed with DIPG is probably spending her last Mother's Day with this precious child. Too many sad things like this in the world. You just have to appreciate every day of healthy living.

Yes sir. It's a terrible disease. Watched my grandfather go out with that. Probably the only thing worse from the victim perspective would be ALS which is my worst nightmare.

ALS to me is worse on the person who has it
Dementia is worse on the family. :(
