If it could happen anywhere it would probably have been Hawaii - they had only recently been granted statehood and they may have been struggling with the aftermath of that. I'm unfamiliar with whether or not "colored" may have been the default situation if one had 'black blood' as it was in the south at that time.

Many states of the time did have an official policy to list the race of the baby the same as the mother. Maybe you weren't born in one of those states, maybe your mom appeared to be white, or maybe employees didn't follow the state policy. Either way your one example to the contrary doesn't disprove his statement.

In the state where I was born there is no place on the birth certificate to list the race of the baby. Perhaps that was common outside the south?
