I say pretty underrated. It's hardly mentioned when people talk about great sitcoms of the past.

There's a reason for that. It's appropriately rated.

not to jack your thread, but when watching Red Oaks I was wondering where I recognized Mr. Getty from.

ETA: now to contribute to your thread, yes I thought it was a pretty decent sitcom for its time as well.

I remember watching this show with my parents when I was a kid and being bored by it. Now when I catch a repeat, I find myself laughing more than probably necessary at 20 year old jokes.

I think you had to be married at the time.

My sister was recently married at the time and loved it.

I hated it.

It's also very 90's. Unlike Cheers which doesn't feel so dated.

Mad About You did have some good writing (it wasn't My Two Dads lame) but I'm sorry...

There was just something about the characters that were so annoying. I mean, Murphy Brown annoying for couples.

Was another show about a family, and there were plenty of those to compete against in the 90's. Only difference is they were kind of newly weds. But nothing spectacular about the show from what I remember. Nothing original.

I'd say it's overrated since it's not discussed as one of the worst in TV history.

Good but not great. Didn't age well.

I never got over Jamie cheating on Paul.

Great supporting cast.

Appropriately rated as a good for its time sitcom. Not really transcendent in any way.

i thought it was ok - there were some funny episodes but overall nothing spectacular.

the actor i'm beginning to appreciate more and more that was on that show is this guy.

I mean yeah he plays virtually the same character no matter the role but he really nails that character.

I thought his scenes in Red Oaks season 2 were really good. You really felt for the guy; late 50s in a job he hates, wife leaves him and becomes a lesbian, son loves him but is getting older and doesn't have time to spend with him anymore.

Wasn't it part of the Thursday night NBC powerhouse? If so, Freinds, Seinfeld, and Cheers definitely propped it up.

NBC had an embarrassment of riches when it came to sitcoms in the 80's/90's. You had Cheers, Cosby, Seinfeld, News Radio, Wings carrying the Mad About You's and Just Shoot Me's.

Helen Hunt has lost control of the show's ratings

That's exactly the thing. It was a bland, couples sitcom, sort of the Grey's Anatomy of its day. Even the Simpsons made fun of it.

It was a decent show with some good gags (Estes Kefauver! Estes Kefauver!), but it was done in by stardom going to Helen Hunt's head and her becoming incapable of playing a likeable character. The show went off a cliff.
