For all the hype they gave that freshman outfielder all weekend in TV coverage he looked poor with such lack of effort on that play

Just watched the replay. Watson was on the bag as he fielded the ball

I was sitting midway between the third base bag and where the hit landed.
The runner could have been thrown out had the left fielder come up throwing.

You have no clue, I've coached enough third base to know that you can.
You judge the ball in flight and say part way and the runner drifts off the bag.
Routine play really. Immediately tag on a ball in the air and drift up the line if it's shallow in case it falls in.

Left fielder def. should have made the throw. Could have gotten him with a good throw. He must have thought the runner was running and not that close to the bag.

Now that you pointed it out, I did not give it much thought at the time, but I remember the camera showing the hit and the outfielder's reaction, which included the ball bouncing up, him grabbing it and his disgust.
The next camera shot is the baserunner about 1/2 way from home plate speeding down the line. His distance from home plate after such a long lapse in time now makes sense with the tag-up explanation.

Cain couldn't tell it was too shallow to tag??
Even if it's shallow, if they catch it you still have to go back to the bag. He did what he's been taught to do since he was about 5.

It was a line drive not a fly ball. The ball was in the air for maybe 3 seconds. If it was a true fly ball I would get your point but this play in particular is a different situation. He did the right thing ball hit in air he went back to bag. At that point once you get third then you judge the distance. This play as soon as he got back to third the ball hit the ground. Usually even if you aren't tagging you will bluff the tag to force a throw anyway so he would still need to be on the bag.
the only person who did anything wrong on this play was the left fielder not attempting a throw. Would have taken a perfect throw to get him and he wasn't square to make the throw but you have to attempt it.

The left fielder must have thought Watson was cruising into home and just tossed it away in disgust.

And I'm sure the LF had a noodle arm, right?

Watson tagging was very poor coaching
No. That's exactly wrong.

It was a left handed outfielder and he was moving full speed towards the foul line to try and catch the ball in the air. There was no way he could have worked his body around and made an accurate throw home with enough velocity to beat the runner home. The hit was not as shallow as DoubleB is claiming. It wasn't warning track deep for sure, but it was deep enough and hit on enough of a line drive angle that the outfielder could not get any momentum on a potential throw home.

The need to find blame on a coach for absolutely everything is insufferable on this board. Even a play to win the game someone is going to try and say the coach messed up.

Meh, chunking the ball into the bullpen is way cooler.
Edit: that's not my downvote on your post
