WWI and Vietnam
WWI had just massive, idiotic killing. The trench warfare was ridiculous with numerous, highly unqualified officers (for the Brits) sending men in droves to die to gain a trench or two that would be lost in a few days.
Vietnam had the unknown factor and the beginning of guerilla warfare on a huge scale. Couldn't imagine being in such an unfamiliar, unforgiving place never knowing where the enemy might be hiding. It's been a while since I read Four hours in My Lai, but I can imagine mental states were way off when that massacre happened.
Unrelated, MASH is best war centric, non documentary, show.

WWI across the board. The trenches, the poison gas, the invention of modern warfare sucked. You were most definitely in for a world of shite during WWI.
WWII outdoes it in certain specific locations. I think I'd rather be in the trenches than Stalingrad. I'd also imagine running into Auschwitz or any city in the warpath of the Japanese would cause some pretty awful PTSD.

In comparison, there were a combined 620,000 during the whole Civil War.

Pacific theater didn't have battles that lasted over five months as WW1 did. Verdun and The Somme for example.

Hospitals were full of soldiers dealing with ptsd even then btw. They just called it shell shock.

Another good point. Soldiers at the time were expecting a far different type of warfare than they encountered. War was still romanticized then

Lucky for us, the US Army trenches in World War One were not filled with dead bodies and human waste. Those conditions may have existed for other armies in that war but not for the US Soldiers and Sea Soldiers.
But if we are talking about ALL soldiers in all wars, then, yes, we should take a close look at WWI battles like Verdun, the Somme and Passchendaele where those conditions were, at times, present.

It doesn't have to be exclusive to US military personnel, but, for the USA, it is the Vietnam War.

I'm going with WW1
Reasons:
-Artillery barrages that lasted for DAYS that only led up to defending an assault.
-Antiquated tactics in the face of modern weaponry
-Most widespread use of chemical warfare ever
-Battles that had 50K KIA/WIA in a single day. That is just astounding. (See third point)
