Marc Stein laid off from ESPN

He was one of the bigger news breakers they had for the NBA. WTF ESPN?
If Yahoo wasn't semi going out of business itself, I'd say they should add a lot of the layoffs to The Vertical and become the authority on all things NBA.

Informed I'm among ESPN's layoffs. But basketball, as they say, never stops. To readers/viewers/listeners/countless colleagues ... grateful

He'll be unemployed for all of five minutes. Still sucks, though.

What's the TP gonna pay him with? Shares of ownership? I mean what's that even worth?

I think that's considered a liability at this point

And now Chad Ford is gone, at least after they are giving him until after the draft

sucks that ESPN is downsizing NBA coverage since that is arguably the best thing they do and the best stable of reporters they have.
same time, there are so many NBA outlets now. and so many ways to support the work you like those guys will be picked up quickly or will go out on their own and will continue to do awesome work.
in the meantime, here's a google doc that Ian Levy (@HickoryHigh, former Nylon Calculus editor) put together for consumers to support various NBA writers/artists/podcasts

Shea Serrano's BAOT newsletter was a godsend last year. Can't wait to order his book
Also excited for the Game Point quarterly- disappointed it's Kickstarter failed, but glad to see they're still trying

Some whispers are saying again that Woj might be on his way to ESPN.
Posted on 4/29/17 at 8:40 am to pawel
yeah. we'll see on that. seems weird for ESPN to slash salary and so many quality reporters to then offer Woj a huge deal to leave Yahoo.
and- dont get me wrong- Woj is awesome. but in the Twitter era, is getting scoops worth $2M+ a year? especially since they would probably put him behind a paywall.

i completely lost track of Chad ford once they put him behind the paywall
no way they could do that with woj and frankly I'm surprised he would consider espn
basically he just uses yahoo as a backbone right now
it seems like he could easily make more money as an owner of his content rather than an employee but who knows
