Golf...Releasing the club?

talking to some of the guys at my club and they all think you should physically try to "release" the club instead of just swinging. what do y'all think?

The club releases naturally with good mechanics. Keeping your butt back at address (acting like a counterweight to the torso) and throughout the swing while maintaining spine angle (no early extension), then on the downswing rotating the left hip open and back, which should allow your weight to shift to the outside arch and heel of the left foot at the finish. The club should automatically stay underneath you and the have a natural release.

THIS.. All of this. Almost every amateur golfer does this yet doesn't get taught how to correct it. I struggle with it and I've been playing for 19 years. Here is a picture that might help
The picture on the left is where you want your butt throughout the swing. The picture on the right is what many people suffer from.. "Humping the goat" Which means you are lifting your right leg into your swing path causing you to flip your hands and have all sorts of mis hits.

Search monte scheinblum plane and release by feel video.

Until I developed acute tendonitis in my left wrist last June (I had to stop golfing because of the severe pain), I was using a slow motion/stop action camera app to help me correct this. It is difficult to correct if you can't see to understand what you are doing. Once you see how ugly it is, and where you break down in the swing, it really opens your eyes to the changes you need to correct.

you had me up until this phrase...the club releasing can be natural, but for the most part the initial release must be forced in order to keep the club on path. if not then you have a great downswing with a way too upright follow through. I've seen it too many times where you get the backswing-downswing-impact perfect and you screw it up by not rotating the forearms to release the club head. I understand what you are saying that it should be "natural" but all that is natural is nothing but learned processes, and this is no different.

what do you mean by this?

you must initiate the rotation of your forearms to start the club going left. otherwise you end up swinging left with the clubface pointing right.

ok i see what you mean.
do you have active or passive arms in the downswing? reason why i ask is cause i feel like my arms don't do anything in the downswing and i don't try to release, but the guys who try to hit with the arms all say they try to release the club.

I straighten out that right leg like a motherfricker

If you think too much about releasing the club you are gonna over or under cook it. Everything stays straight and on plane the club has to release. Otherwise you would feel like you are swinging an axe.

I have passive, and I taught passive until you get to impact where the right forearm needs to rotate over the left (if you are right handed). in order for your swing to be effective through impact, you need to do something about it, you can't just let it happen, because it won't.

if you rotate through the ball you have no need to use the forearms, and in a golf swing with proper rotation the right arm doesn't actually cross over the left, it just looks like it does because of side bend... and if it does, it's well after impact

I agree completely, but if you are having difficulty with pushes, then you are not getting rotation (by chance or physical stability) then the forearms are a good thing to key in on in terms of rotation...also, majority of the time a side affect of forearm rotation is a lack of the flying right elbow.

Butt thrusts in golf cause the worst swing issues.
Keep that golf butt back and transfer weight to that left foot - the heel

I'm not sure about any of this....but I recently changed my grip which has done wonders with reducing my slice.
