What poor kids didn't have one of these growing up?
My friend and I each had one. We thought we could take on the wilderness and build log cabins with them![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Ontario rat 3 is a good affordable choice

Disagree, but why do you say that?

It's poorly designed

Care to elaborate? That's pretty vague. I find that it never slips out of my hand because of that handle.

I've got a full size Kabar I usually strap to my boot when I'm in the woods. It's such a good knife. I picked up a Gerber Strongarm on sale at academy on an impulse a few months ago. It's got pretty good reviews online and honestly has become one of my favorite knives. I carry it on me when I'm in the kayak.
Ive got a little Esee Izula. It's a fun little knife and it carries well at the small of your back on a horizontal mount.

Condor knives. This is an actual survival/whittling knife.

Ergonomics of the handle are nothing. It's a lazy, cheap way to make a handle

I do apologize for the way too late response to this. You could probably search online for instructors in your area and what courses are available. When I was teaching survival, it was for a military contract and while I did not instruct on the side, a couple of my former coworkers did. I miss the work but I'm currently pursuing an airline career. Again, sorry for such a late response. Learn what you can, you never know when you may need those skills.

Benchmade Nimravus or SOG Pup are going to be 2 great choices here. Gerber LMF II is nice knife, too.

Ka-bar, OKC classics, some from Cold Steel, you seriously do not need to spend much because the best knives of this type are simple and made from plain high-carbon steel. You want a knife that can handle rough work, sharpen easily, have some weight to chop with, and with as few parts in the handle as possible.

This is made out a solid piece of bearing steel and cheap enough that you can mess around with it to suit your needs. I'd drill a few holes in the handle to paracord wrap it. Keep it wiped with a little oil.
