Should BioWare drop the concept of open world?

I think we've seen a trend with Dragon Age Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda. Both games contain a 15-20 hour main story spread out across 100 hours of mostly rather meaningless side missions spread out across huge, mostly empty maps.
In both games, there are interesting side activities, but they can be easy to miss when they're lumped in with what largely amounts to just MMORPG-like busy work. In Andromeda in particular, there's so much to do outside of the main story that given the nature of BioWare games you often don't know what you should do or when because you're afraid doing or not doing something is going to have an effect on the main story.
I think I prefer the smaller, quasi-open world nature of older BioWare titles like KOTOR, the first two Dragon Age games, and the Mass Effect trilogy. It just seemed like those games had much tighter stories and the side missions were better integrated into the main game.
That said, it's not impossible to make an open world title with a focus on story. Witcher 3 does this very well. Most every side mission is interesting and many of them tie in and enhance the main story as well. You still have simple fetch quests and typical open world fare in Witcher 3, but those activities are easier to identify and largely easy to ignore.

Open world is a fairly shitty concept in practice. Very few developers do it well. Most just create empty spaces with a few chores to accomplish.
The best games give the illusion of open world but are actually quite linear. I don't mind the occasional expansive hub area to roam in, but don't over do it.
So many games trade a good narrative for a sandbox. Mgs v and final fantasy xv are two that come to mind in recent memory.

I spent about 2-3 hours last night wondering aimlessly doing side tasks and non-priority missions. I'll never get that time back, but I feel it was necessary at the time.
Bioware really screwed the pooch on Andromeda single player. Multiplayer is fun, and combat is fun.
Animations don't bother me so much, but the mission structure and open-worldness is severely F'd

Precisely. Do it like the Deus Ex games, Witcher 2, etc

well, that's an interesting way to put it.

It's literally the same type of game as Dragon Age Origins just with only like 5 actual areas to explore

Open world is ruining some of my favorite game series. (FF, MGS, ME) I have been saying this for a long time.
It is really frustrating because the word linear is seen as a bad thing and developers are reacting to open world games that sold great in the past.
I swear if Naughty Dog tries to make Last if Us 2 "open world" I am done. (I know they won't though)

and all of those areas are within the same city.
anyways i agree with your premise. time to stop the open world dream. BOTW has set the bar so high , no one should eve try for the next 18 months unless you have some REAL hot new ideas, like Horizon
Bioware just doesn't have the same magic. Lets hope their "new IP" the "A team" was working on turns out to be good.

I agree that it has to be done properly. Horizon: ZD did a very good job of it. I actually wanted to go to all the locations on the map.

I don't mind open world games. I just think BioWare's attempts at the genre thus far have been sub-par and have come at the expense of the main story.

Open world?
*takes a drag on a cigarette*
Yeah I remember when that used to mean something.

I haven't bought a Mass Effect game since the second one...and from hearing the feedback on Andro I probably won't buy this one.

No. They should just do a better job at it.

I think nigh impossible trick to open world games is to give the player incentive and encouragement to explore and, of course, make it fun and interesting.

Might be the best in the series if you have played the other two before it, but the game is incomplete without the Citadel DLC.
