How is Jacque Imo's?

I'm gonna be in town this weekend with my gf. It's her first time in New Orleans and I wanted to take her to a cool, fun, laid back place on Friday. I've never been to Jacques Imo's, but it seems like it would fit the bill.
How is the food, service, etc? How long should I expect the wait to be if we get there around 7:00 or 8:00 for dinner? If it's a long wait, hanging out at Maple Leaf would be a good option, right?

If you're going at that hour, you're going to wait but that's what the Maple Leaf is for. The food is still good as usual and it will be fun and laid back.

I've found it to be decent food when I've been in the past; for similar money though better options abound.

Is he still doing Austin Leslie's fried chicken? When that is done right it's very good.

It's very good, borderline great. Just plan to go early, otherwise you'll be waiting forever for a table.

Like how early do you think? What time does it start getting packed?

I've never eaten there and regretted it.
About 45-1 hour
Yup
Have fun

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It does get a LOT of hate on this board, so I'm kind of surprised at the responses here. Usually gets a fair amount of thrashing.
It IS overpriced, and it IS always retardedly packed. It can be a bit too casual.
But the food is really solid and its a great place to take out of towners looking for that style of food and an experience. Locals not as much, but its a great spot for those not that familiar with the cuisine and looking to have a good time.
You will wait at least an hour during peak times on the weekend.

Go for the atmosphere as much for the food. I remember back in the day it always a fun mix of tourist, locals, and attractive 20-somethings. You will wait though, especially if its a busy weekend in town.

Awesome atmosphere. I thought the food was good.
We didn't have too long of a wait time, but we went right next door and grabbed a beer.

i always plan for the leaf AFTER since shows dont start til 10/11
before that its an ok spot to hang out, but the music is what makes it noteworthy.
as to the restaurant -- its good. a little pricey for what it is(i havent been in a bit so may be wrong but i doubt thats changed), and a long wait. you could probably do better but the experience is fun and the food solid so any complaints are taken with a grain of salt.

What is a comparable restaurant in terms of food selection and ambiance?

Overpriced
Packed
Food is good
Biggest selling point is you get to wait at the maple leaf for your table

I don't eat much fried food anymore but that fried chicken there is excellent. When they are on top of their game that day in the kitchen that may possibly be some of the best fried chicken in the country. I would go there if I was from out of town. It's a pretty fun place especially for visitors.

Do y'all think it would be better to go on a Friday or Sunday night? Would it be less fun on a Sunday night?

im venturing that you might be overthinking it if still asking questions.
Go when you want, have fun, pencil in an hour or so of waiting/drinking if you go at a peak time.

Friday would def. be an easier night. Just go a little earlier either night and you will be fine.
