Beauty and the Beast thoughts and discussions

I went and saw it last night with my wife. I was kinda let down. It was ok, but Belle was definitely miscast. Emma Watson is not a good enough singer to be the female lead in a musical. I know I will probably get bashed for this, but I think it would have been a lot better with Anne Hathaway as the lead. Emma Watson just can't hit the high notes, and it is distracting.
Kevin Klein is hilarious and Gaston is cast really well even though they cut his line about being covered with hair. I suppose Luke Evans is a shaver. They go into the back story a little more about how the beast became the beast and how Belle's mom died. There are a few songs added in that weren't on the original. I assume they are the Broadway songs.
I missed the "first openly gay scene" though. Is it where lafoo and the other guy are dancing at the end? Is that what all the fuss was about? I was expecting two guys making out from all the media praise about bravery.
Visually it was beautiful. I saw it in 2D and you can tell it's one of those that they shot it to be seen in 3d. Overall it was good not great. 6/10. My wife wants to go see it again, but she can go with her friends next time. I'm not rushing out to see this again.

Hathaway would have been terrible.

She has singing chops though.

I won't be seeing this movie for two reasons:
1. I won't be preached to by some gay agenda trying to normalize perverse behavior.
2. Why on Earth would they cast anyone less attractive than Hugh Jackman to play the Gaston? He's obviously the sexiest man alive and denying us his portrayal of the character is borderline criminal.

They could have found an up and comer like they did with Cinderella.

It didn't exist. Lafoo was more goofy and idolizing of Gaston than gay seeming. Just as the original was.

Yeah, but how much of the hype was Watson as Belle? She is a large reason the movie is going to make $500M this weekend. I'm just saying she was a letdown.

What about the non Jackman Gaston? How badly was the film ruined by the lack of his Australian masculinity gracing the screen?

Jacked-mon is too old, but at least every last inch of him is covered with hair (in true Gaston fashion).
In all seriousness though, Luke Evans was actually a really good Gaston.

She is not "a large reason" this film will make money. Seriously???

You're kidding yourself if you think Watson being Belle didn't add a ton to the hype.

All I keep thinking is, "all of this is irrelevant to my 5 and 7 year old girls". Lol
95% chance they think this will be the GOAT. Taking them next week to Alamo draft house. That way even it's bad I will still have some good food and booze.

You're kidding yourself if you think this movie would have made less with another lesser known actress.

I offered to bring my kids to see Beauty & the Beast this weekend but they said they already have seen the cartoon one lol. So now we are going to see Kong.

The big reason I'm looking forward to seeing it. Gaston is definitely one of my all time favorite characters. All the reviews, regardless of how critical, all say he knocked it out of the park.

You watch your fricking mouth!!!
But seriously, glad to hear it's good. I think I'm getting dragged to this Sunday, so there's worse ways to nurse a hangover it sounds like.

quote:I have to agree with op here. The movie would still have made a killing obviously, but having one of the main characters in mo-cap cgi and the other one an unknown would have affected the box office in some fashion. Cinderella made a good amount of money, but I believe Watson's casting put this one on another level. She's becoming one of the most talked about actresses in Hollywood, whether it be for negative or positive reasons. She added some flare and excitement to the movie.

Emmy Rossum would have made a good Belle. Has the look and some serious pipes.
She's not a big name draw, though. Emma Watson was the right pick in terms of hype.

Emmy Rossum has been naked on TV 52 too many times to be a Disney princess.

I think so too, she is better looking as well. Emma Watson gets way too much praise because she was a Hermione.
The new songs were from broadway and I think they added them in the extended cut of the movie too.
